an increasingly popular and effective tactic on the clay?...if so, does this really amount to the field coming to terms , fed included, with how to beat the man from mallorca on clay?

Fed was going crazy with the DS in his 1st round match. He hit like 10 consecutive ones and all were winners I think.

Has nothing to do with any individuals. Just an obvious tactic to combat those who a) stand too far behind the baseline; b) are taller and aren't as nimble as others.

fed is still experimenting with people.
masters tournaments and GS early rounds is when fed makes tests on his guinea pigs

The more tall players get, the more the shorter ones (under 6-4) need it
Federer, Ferrer, Gulbis,Monaco and most of all Montanes

The drop shot, when played when your opponent is behind the baseline, is a greatly effective tactic on clay especially given HOW far back a lot of these guys are playing.

Well for someone who puts such depth, drift and spin on his BH slices pulling drop shots was only a matter of choice , remember his drop shot against Agassi in US open ?
