View Full Version : Advice Needed: My First Moving Sale

Tina

Dear TTW Posters,

I am going to have my first moving sale. In our city, department stores have to use a special device to avoid fake cash.

1) I am not sure whether I should ask those buyers to write me check or pay me in cash.

2) Would it be an appropriate option if I decide to sell those items to used furniture stores?

Any advice? Thank you.

Iv'e never heard of someone going to a yard sale with counterfeit bills. Id take my chances with the cash. Just give any bill 50 or larger and good look in the son to see the water mark. Here a poster from the secret service off all the security features as of 2008.

Unless you know the person don't take a check. Its too easy for someone to call the bank pay 25 or 30 dollar fee and cancel it than to make legit looking money.

Of course its appropiate. Its your stuff blow it up if you want. I have not dealt with 2nd hand stores before so I'm not sure if you would get as much. But you wouldn'[t be sitting around all day hoping someone comes to buy your stuff either.

Sell hotdogs, chips and soda on the side and pick up a few more bucks.

Take cash, because you'll find that people will over you five dollars for things you consider worthy of much more. That's how it goes at these sort of sales.

I did exactly one yard sale, when we moved from SF to DC back in the early 1990s.

I will never do it again. It was a lot of work. We made $200, which wasn't bad.

The problem was that you have to sit out there all day with people picking through your crap, walking up to tell you all the ways in which your crap is crap, and then offering you $1 for your crap. Add in the time to clean and organize the crap in the first place and the time to donate the crap that doesn't sell and you're looking at 2+ days of your time.

Now I just make periodic donations to the Salvation Army.

And yes, take cash only. Don't "hold" anything for anyone unless they pay you in full first. Don't let anyone into your house. Don't leave your cash box even for an instant.

How about put down my phone number for those buyers who are interested in any items on advertisement in our apt complex. They would contact me if want to know about the price and schedule a visit. Thanks.

PS. I am living in an apt owned by our landlord.

It's a good idea to have someone else with you so that funds and goods are monitored at all times.

Use a fanny pack to hold your funds. Cash only, no checks. Serious buyers will make sure they have cash for higher priced items.

Have an extension cord set up so that people can see that electronics work.

If possible, hang clothing and group by size. My husband strung a couple of lines in the garage and we moved a lot of clothing.

Place barriers between the sale area and entrances to your home. Better yet, lock your exterior doors so that no one can enter but you.

Have a prominently marked FREE bin and fill it with odds and ends. Puts buyers in a good mood and moves your junk to someone else's house. I got rid of several cans of paint this way (bad color choices).

Buyers will flock to yard sales that start early, so advertise the earliest start time you can manage. But don't let people on your property before you are set up and ready. Those early morning hagglers are a pain in the butt.

Arrange for Salvation Army or Easter Seals to come pick up what doesn't sell. And for crying out loud, price you stuff to sell. Your objective really should be to get this crap out of your house.

Anymore, it's easier to sell bigger items through Craig's List and donate smaller things. Around here, Easter Seals and Purple Hearts Veterans will come to your home (especially if you are in a nice neighborhood) and pick up goods. All I have to do is leave the items on my front porch.

Ummmmm....seriously?

You would let people come into your home to view items? That's just not safe. Don't give out any personal info and don't let anyone in your apartment. If you can't safely sell it, donate it and take the tax deduction.

I'm sure everyone on this site can share a story or two about the person who "seemed" very nice but turned out to be not so nice.

Also, NEVER mention the price. No matter how bad the item they're checking out looks (i.e. they're wobbling it, or checking the screws) do NOT give a price. Let THEM determine it so you can control it.

However, always have an assumed price in your head before you sell it. If they give you more than what your thought was, then you take it and it makes them happy, otherwise you raise the price a little bit. ^^

Yep i read a book that started off with this guy had been posing as someone else to get close to a woman to get in her house, then he killed her, just so he could steal one of her art works.

Dont do it Tina!!!

If you do, at least take down any nice paintings you have.

No Worries. Of course, I will screen several candidates to schedule a visit. I am moving out of my place in Aug. The phone number will be changed too.:)

Let me tell you a little story.

I was living in a college town. I lived in the dorms. A friend lived with her girlfriends in an apartment.

They needed to sublet for the summer, so they advertised. A man called and asked to see the place. He arrived and was clean cut and nice and seemed interested in the place. He asked to use the restroom. When he came out, he had his pants down and a huge erection in his hand. My friend bolted out the front door.

She was lucky.

Don't let anyone into your house. Period.

I can't move heavy furniture out of my apt. I am thinking of calling several second hand furniture stores to sell my items, Cindy. Does that work? Thanks.

No worries. I am a very careful person. I know what I am doing. Phone screening+ email screening might help me out of troubles a bit. Just now, another guy is interested in buying my HDTV. Thank you for your concern though. -T

My favourite TW hoodie went missing about two years ago, before I even had my apt sale. I wonder who might know something about that one. Moving to Sakhalin is loads of stress every time.

Be careful with zapvor Tina, he is a dangerous man. By the way, have you thought of getting one of those cash-check pencils to check cash? It's not as good as UV, but much cheaper and more compact.

zapvor is very naughty and out of control. Regards the pencil, I cannot speak with authority (being a UV guy myself), but do a google on "counterfeit pen" and see if you can order one online easily?

Actually, some people believe that the southern half of the island (karafuto) as well as the islands of shikotan, kunashiro and etorofu, are property of Japan.
