View Full Version : Need help in deciding gauge for natural gut!

I have decided to order 3 sets of Babolat VS gut . I would like to know whether I should buy 2 16g and 1 15L string or vice-versa. I would also appreciate comments on the difference between the 15L gauge and the 16 gauge. Thanks

If you want the 15L, why don't you just get the Tonic? It's cheaper and play similar...

If you go for VS, then you need to at least try the 17. The biggest difference between VS and Tonic is that VS is the only one to offer it in 17. My rec, therefor, would be for one set of VS 17, one set of Tonic 16 and one set of VS 16. See if you can tell the difference between Tonic and VS 16. If you can't... then you know what you should buy in the future to save yourself some mullah.

I'd say start with 16 and go thinner/thicker/same depending on how satisfied you are with the life of the 16 gauge.

VS 17 plays much better than the 16 in my experience.

Anyone tried the Pacific or Klip gut strings?

I have tried the budget Pacific Classic gut. It's softer than VS. But it's like the cheaper Babolat in that its gauge isn't consistent. Some strings are thicker than others.

It's a good string, though, just not VS 17.

Pacific strings have the most impressive numbers in terms of stiffness and tension retention as I recall. Tough Gut is the softest and Prime has the best tension retention.

VS 17 plays much better than the 16 in my experience.

True but VS 17 breaks a lot faster too. 15 gauge lasts the longest but not sure I actually like the feel of that one compared to VS 16 or Team 17.

The 15 is boardy, at least the Longevity version.
