Yes, it is a very good racket, very large sweet spot. Very comfortable racket lots of pop and it really bites the ball. It is a great serving stick as well.

pogo howd you like the rd-7 i heard it gas great spin.
I like it better than the POG OS for spin only because I can get much more pace on the ball with the RD-7 with the same amount of spin as the POG OS. The RD-7 is a great serving stick also as it plows through the ball.

I have gone through 3 RD-7, two of them cracked due to overuse :). I"m babying the third one now.

I can't wait to get my hands on the O3 tour though :)

Do the Hornet is a control or a power racquet?

POGO
06-02-2005, 05:09 PM
Do the Hornet is a control or a power racquet?
Its balanced for both control and power. The power level is 925. Prince has a rating from 600 all the way up to 1100, lower power to high power, more control to less control.

So the Hornet is in the middle of the prince rating, a balance of control and power.

My PS 85's have seen plenty of use (both are over three years old). I've noticed that the paintjob on them was done quite nicely. Both PS 85's are the same grip size. They've managed to look new for some reason. I clean my leather grips fairly often and the Fairways on the PS 85's manage to look new somehow. As you guys can see, I'm a big fan of leather grips :) I agree that the Dunlop Mfil 200 doesn't look all that great with the stock grip. The Mfil definitely looks better with a leather grip on it.

Gotta love that Dunlop Maxply, Craig! Do you still hit with it now and then? That's the woodie I grew up using. :D

I see you still have your Pro Extremes and X-1 also. I still need to hit with the Pro #1 one of these days. I know you love it, so I'm wondering if it's better than my PS 6.0 95's.

Craig Sheppard
06-02-2005, 09:01 PM
BP, I'm so embarrassed--I've actually NEVER hit with it! <yikes> I bought it on a whim of **** for $9 a few years ago and have wanted to hit w/ it but never got around to it. I just hang it on a wall and look at it like it's awesome... ;-)

Well, if you're ever around NC or near Philly (my parents/family lives there), you can hit with mine. I just hit w/ a PS 6.0 95 recently for a few min. Noticed right away it definitely was lower powered than the Pro 1. Higher swingweight too. More vibration, and <gulp> should I say it, felt less stable. That was only about 2 or 3 min with it though doing groundstrokes only. I need to pick up a PS 6.0 95 and 85 for my collection! Someday.

BreakPoint
06-02-2005, 09:11 PM
Craig,
No need to be embarrassed. What would be even more embarrassing is trying to use a Maxply these days playing against someone using a modern graphite racquet. Yikes!!! :o

Yes, the PS 6.0 95 isn't the most stable feeling stock. I guess that's why so many users add lead tape. However, it has that raw, natural, flexy, wood-like feel that many, including me, seem to like. It has a tiny sweetspot, but when you hit it, nothing feels better IMHO. Miss the sweetspot and be ready for some vibration. It also hits slices like a hot knife through butter! Next time you get your hands on a PS 6.0 95, I suggest trying some serves with it. Next to backhand slices, serving is its strongest suit.

Guys,

I have to ask the obvious question: What do you do with your older racquets? I notice that most people have multiples of the same racquet so Im assuming at some stage they were all frames you used to play with. But, what about now? Are they still in use or are you holding onto the extra ones for sentimental reasons?

Oh, and do you still leave the strings in, even if you aren't using them?

- I only ask that as I saw a couple of Dunlop 200G's (my old, original racquet from when I was playing state level comp) and they were notorious for warping. I used to have 8 of them (all broke or warped over the years) but would never leave strings in if they weren't part of the rotation (would have 3 in rotation at any one time then go to the next group). The one time I did it warped -

tennisnoob
06-02-2005, 11:42 PM
Mostly for sentimental reasons for the extra ones.....though its taking up awful lot of space!

Plus some of the classic frames like the Knessl, Addidas, Puma and Rossignol are worth keeping IMO.

AndrewD
06-03-2005, 12:54 AM
Well you've got to keep the special ones. I know Ive got an old Head Prestige Pro (think its the first generation Prestige) and a Prince Precision Mono plus a Classic, POG and Graph Comp 110 that will be kept for those reasons.

Ideally I'd like to have
1. Dunlop 200G (original version)
2. Rossignol F200
3. POG midplus
4. PS 6.0 85
5. Wilson Profile 95
6. Snauwert Hi-Ten 50
7. Fischer Stan Smith
8. Puma Boris Becker Super
9. Head EdgeWood or the Head Vilas (or both lol)
10. Yonex R-22

of course there are others that would be nice to have and I haven't included any of the old wooden frames. Kicking myself that I put an old Prince Boron and Woodie into storage and they appear to have gone missing. If I had those two Id have a nice line up of the early Prince frames

Ouch! You lost a Prince Boron and the Woodie!?!?!? That's gotta hurt!

AndrewD
06-03-2005, 01:37 AM
Its more a nuisance than anything else. I got them both second hand for $60 and $70 a number of years ago. The Woodie still played quite well but the Boron had been broken and repaired which made it pretty darn heavy. The Woodie was smooth as silk and Id actually say if you liked a heavy-ish frame with quite a bit of flex and were willing to string it quite low you could still play with it today.

Guess one day I'll try to replace them. Have to say though, the Woodie and the Head Edgewood were two of the best looking racquets I've ever seen. Nothing beats that classical combination of wood and leather.

GregOz
06-03-2005, 03:24 AM
tennisnoob, if you break a racquet you can have it repaired, assuming the damage isn't Safin-esque. Im not sure of the exact process, perhaps someone here who is a racquet stringer/technician could explain, but I think they cut out the broken area, insert a solid bridging piece and fuse them together. It's not something you see very often so don't know if they can do it with today's racquets. It wasn't very popular back in the day as it made the racquet heavier and totally threw out the balance. I guess the person had it done as they must have paid an arm and a leg for the Boron when they first got it. I seem to remember them going for over $400+ so that's reason enough.

I remember in the 80's being a hitting partner for an American guy, Eric Korita, who came out to Oz to play the summer circuit. He used the Boron so I got a chance to have a try of his frame and, I swear, if you think the PD is stiff you should have tried that thing. Surprisingly though, it actually had more 'feel' than I expected (which means it had almost none but thats more than I expected lol).

AndrewD, I still hit with one of my Dunlop Max 200g's. Only one of them is strung. The other one is pretty much in storage. When it comes to storing racquets, the Max 200g is the only racquet that I'll cut the strings out before storing.

Is it really that bad on the Max 200g? I actually do have one as well stored away in God knows where? I better take it out & look, its probably warped anyway - lol

GregOz
06-03-2005, 07:05 AM
The 200G's were pretty bad for warping but the old Prestige mids also were known for that. Not as bad as the Dunlops though. Just put it down on a flat surface (head and throat only) and you'll quickly see if there's been any warping. Often it wasn't severe but just enough to be annoying. Still a beautiful racquet though, one of the truly great frames and one of the most innovative design concepts in terms of design. If I was picking out some old racquets based only on that requirement Id have the original Prince Oversize, the Dunlop 200G, the Rossignol F100 or F200 and the Wilson Profile.

I wish I had known this years ago. I used one early on and then put it away in the basement... came back from college only to find that it looked more like something you'd use in jai-alai than tennis. :-( I've still got it, maybe I can warp it back!

Huh, and here I thought Hrbaty was using the Pro Number 1, not the Xtreme :o The other person using it is, of course, Meghan Shaunessy (I know I butchered the spelling there).

And I hear ya about the anonymity of the frame. Most people I've played against or talked with at events have never heard of it and half the tennis pros at my facility have barely even heard of Fischer as a brand  The downside to it is that I've got a pair and would like to purchase a third but can't justify the full retail price of $190 (cheapest I've seen is $160) since you almost never see these on ****.

How does that Mfil200 feel in comparison to the other venerable classic racquets you have there ??

I would say the Mfil 200 is a mix between the PS 85 and the Head Classic Mid. I really love the way the Classic Mid feels from the baseline, but I don't enjoy touch shots and net play with it. I really enjoy the PS 85 and I think it's perfect all around. Returning serves with the PS 85 can be a pain sometimes and a larger sweetspot would make baseline rallies a little easier. Anyway, this is where the Mfil 200 comes in. The flexibility feels like it's in between these two racquets (not too flexible and not too stiff). Although I enjoy the flexible feel of the Classic Mid, flexible frames just don't feel right at the net. To keep this short, it hits as well as my Classic Mid from the baseline and gives me that solid feel that the PS 85 has at the net.

My family is in the process of getting rid of a lot of stuff, so unfortunately it all goes into my "stringing" room, so it's too messy to get pictures of all of my tennis things that are in there (or all of my tennis things period). The first picture is of my stringing machine (about 5 years old), where some of my tools, packs of string, and such are located (reels are off in a separate area). Also includes 4 racquets, my 3 Tour 90's and my Vantage that I don't know what to do with. Second is of my 3 Tour 90's prior to matching the specs. If anyone wants I can take pictures along the process of matching my racquets. The reason one still has strings in it is for me to determine my wear pattern so I can see if I can move the COP closer to that area. I have a closer picture of the wear pattern for my use. I have other racquets laying around, but like I said, the stringing room isn't clean enough to get pictures of everything.

Masamusou, when you try to shift the centre of percussion you are going to take into account the vibration dampner aren't you? If you find that the COP is below your wear pattern what you could do is shift the dampner from the bottom of the string bed to the top which would do the same job, add weight up high, move the sweetspot and be perfectly legal.

Masamusou
06-14-2005, 12:33 PM
I've already taken that idea into account, but to me it doesn't feel right. My wear pattern is in the upper part of the string bed (generally between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way from the throat and a little off to one side) and the dampener up at the top doesn't feel right at all. I only have a few grams to match the specs between the 3 racquets so the COP will probably only come into account for the 2 that get matched to the heaviest. It is usually possible to get the weight, balance, swingweight combo the same with slightly different COP's.

Vantage is a company, you can buy their rackets at vantagetennis.com, they sell stock rackets, but the main reason people buy them is because you can customise your own racket spec from what they have on offer.............

I thought that just before your swing you put your arm down and then swing the racket. Or else you would hit your arm if it was constantly poinhted???? OUCH!!!!

but I think that the pic is when she has just started to move the left arm down and swing through on the right...........

Return_Ace, I think what he meant was that without her arm up there's very poor balance and far greater likelihood that the ball toss will be erratic. The spare arm -that you toss the ball with- shouldn't drift off like that as it pulls your other shoulder away from the ball, your hips and shoulders open up way too early and far too much so you get very limited power and run a greater risk of injury as you're using mostly arm in the shot. You want to keep it nice and high and straight so you can execute a good knee bend and explode up at the ball. Keep the arm up and move the grip to a continental and most all of those problems disappear.

Your Lavers look sweet. How do they play???

First off: i have a blue carpet! hah! (earlier in the thread someone mentioned all the carpets looking the same)

The Lavers are a weird stick. They have a very round throat, similar to the Pure Drive, except thinner. This is just a minor issue, but once you get used to it, every other racquet feels "fat" or "boxy" when you hit with them (this is an issue since i support my racquet there when i slice a backhand).

Slice backhands are great, penetrate with a lot of bite. Top spin is adequate, strings are finicky, gotta find the right combo, and i haven't yet. I'm still having some issues customizing this frame how i like, i can't say too much on them as i haven't really found my "sweet spot" for the frame, yet. I'm weighting it up differently and trying different tensions still...

Serves are pretty good, the spinners have bite, but my flat serve suffers, but i can't say it hit it all that often, either.

Tennis Ball Hitter
06-19-2005, 08:58 AM
I have a LM prestige mid. There are no ridges on the outside (ie under the grommet/racquet bumper guard).

If you look at the racquet frame as a cross section, it will be a rectangle with rounded corners. The ridges are on one side of the rectangle (inside of racquet) and continue over the rounded corner [on both sides]. But is not on the short sides of the rectangle.

Don't know if that cleared it up or got you more confused :) .

baselinebrawler

No paint job here. It is a real LM. Tennis Ball Hitter is correct the LM ridges are only on the inside. Not like the Instinct or Radical.

Jeet, I'd probably say my Pro Extreme FT's give a bit more control than the Pro No. 1's. But that's partially due to their low power--balls fly long and seem to jump less on me. I actually PLAY better w/ the Pro No. 1's though, so they are my frame of choice now.

List:
The first 2 say Yamaha Fiberglass YFG 30 and Dunlop DLine 202, used by my father and aunt before me.

The next is a Prince Junior Mini Lite. My very very first racquet ever. I use it now to humiliate my opponents if i am superior.

The next 2 are the ones I started out with. Prince Power Line Energy OS and Head Ti Conquest 2000.

Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90, i got from my instructor second hand, my first players racquet. i kinda regret it cuz i barely use it now.

Yonex RDX 500. I just got it and played with it. Apparently, it's too powerful so i'm getting it restrung soon with my fav string (Luxilon Big Banger Original) at 62, otherwise, I love it.

Last but not least is my Ti Radical MP. I interchange with my Yonex during a normal game. depends on how well i do that day, i guess, since my groundstrokes with this racquet is much more dependable than the ones on my yonex.

Hi Muse, I posted something in the other gear thread but i polly ask u here too..

Ooo, sorry, didn't catch your post in the other thread, I'll answer you here.

Keep in mind when you're compairing a 90 in. head and a 98 in. head, the're gonna play entirely differently.

As you can see with my frames, I like ones with a lower stiffness rating, so with the Pro No. 1 having a stiffness rating of 60, it's a lot softer feeling than most midplus racquets. This makes it good for someone who has an all-court game because you can actually get some touch on your volleys, while maintaining good pop on your serve. I think the RDX is a more comfortable frame for me, but I use a lot of midsize racquets, it's just what appeals to me. Control obviousially favors the RDX, it's got pinpoint accuracy. Don't get me wrong, the Pro No. 1 is not lacking in that department, it's just that hardly any balls sail on me RDX, and when I play with a midplus, I tend to send a few more balls out w/out making the necessary adjustments. Forgiving goes to the Pro No. 1 by virtue of having a larger head. Not as many mishits (though it doesn't happen often anyways). As I said before, a 60 stiffness rating is a godsend on a 98 in. frame, especially in this day where everyone is using stiff Babolats. The RDX has a huge sweetspot for a 90 in. frame though, it plays like it's a 95 in. frame.

Obviousially, if I could only reccomend 1 frame, it would be the RDX 500 mid just because I've demoed a ton of racquets and I decided that it was the best one. What's best for me might not be best for you, and I'd definately reccomend demoing them both to feel them both out (if you use 1 of them, disregard that).

One more thing to keep in mind. My RDX's are new and laced up with a Gut/Lux hybrid, you can't beat the feeling. During my history of playing with the Pro No. 1's, I only used a variety of cheaper, stiffer strings, like NXT, Pro Blend, and Dura Blast (what it's got now). I do not reccomend durablast on any man, I couldn't stand it. It was rather durable though, staying true to it's name. I wish I should give you a same-string comparison, that would compair the 2 racquets.

Sorry if this isn't more helpful, I just got home late from hanging with a bunch of my friends, I'm tired and out of it right now, this is the last thing I'm doing before I'm going to bed. Anyways, I hope this helps you, and sorry I coudln't do a better job.

Thanks Muse.

Its really informative for me.

With that I'll probably go try demo a Pro1 and see if I will like it.
We only have got the 320g version of the Pro 1 here.

As for string wise, Im trying out Pro Hurricane/Head SyntheticGut to see I will like to setup, before deciding to get reels of it.

The far one is tiRadical oversize - he calls it his control racquet(!)
The middle one is a tiHeat he got on sale - it's ok but it has some real cheap strings

The near one might be the interesting one; it's a Pure Competition XL. It's 28", 660 cm2, made in Austria, even balanced(?) and has an 18x19 string pattern(and it claims to have "twin tube" technology. I think the original Radical had that too). It has nice control, great feel(loads of dwell time) and good power too. Does anyone know the other specs of this thing? And anyone know where I can get more? Or why they discontinued it?

I am going to me folks house today to look for my old frames -- I am inspired here.

I am about to purchase some Diablos (I think). I have 2 Head Elektra's from the late 80s. I also had an original grpahite Max 200g (broke) -- it was my main racquet. I also had a Rossignol (ala Mats Wilander -- one of my favorite pros) and an Adidas (like Lendl used). I hated Lendl because I loved JohnnyMac, but that was a cool racquet. I got one and never could hit well with it. I will see if I can find them and photo them for here. The Rossignol was pretty sweet, but I picked it up used and never messed with it much (it had an odd head design and I was loyal to my Dunlop).

Cheers.

federer_nadal, very nice pictures. looks like you've kitted yourself out pretty well with all of that gear.

I see you've got a couple of Wilsons and a Prince NXG there to go with your POG mids. Been playing for years but for one reason or another Ive never had a crack at the POG mid, only the OS which was far too big a head size for me to enjoy. The NXG was okay but seemed to give a pretty tinny response. I recently tried the POG long body and thought it was a hell of a racquet but Im used to a midsize head (long time Prestige user but fancy a change). Hows the POG mid compare to the NXG or any other modern racquet? Im told the power is pretty good - much higher than the Prestige- but how about the swing weight? Is it at all cumbersome at net and on serve and how about the flex, is it as stiff as people say?

ta mate.

Nadal_Rulz
09-02-2005, 08:34 AM
hmm...AI love both of them. the gen 2 was exactly wha i was looking for coming from the 95. i wanted somethign heavier and the gen 2 is,but still swings very light.i get some serious bite on the ball(becaue i have gut in it) and right now im loving it,and have applied for a sponsorship from volkl.the 98 actually took some getting used to at frst which i thought was strane btui it doesnt bother me anymore.both great sticks but im liking the gen 2 better at this point.

AndrewD
09-03-2005, 03:57 AM
Nadal_Rulz,

Do you find that the Gen2 swings considerably lighter than the Tour95? I could never settle with the 98sq for some strange reason, just didn't feel comfortable to me. Anyway, do you think someone who has used the Gen2 would have a hard time going to the Tour95?

Nadal_Rulz
09-03-2005, 04:06 AM
I doubt it.The tour 95 is slightly lighter(but mine even stock seem to be only about a tenth of an ounce lighter) and have a higher swingweight and the gen2 is heavier(not by much) with a lower swingweight so it sort of balances out.I had one gen 2 and popped the gut in 2 days( ) so i was left back to my tour 95's and did not have a problem re-adjusting.

yes, that's what I thought but you made it sound like only one was a PJ. There's 2 nCode PJs in the middle and then a non PJ nCode between 2 Prince racquets at the far right, I think.

To keep this short, it hits as well as my Classic Mid from the baseline and gives me that solid feel that the PS 85 has at the net.

so its just an OK stick, lol

I've gone through just about every Yonex under the sun (within my playing preferences of course .... small frame, on the heavy side, that sort of thing...) and my main stick is still the discontinued RD-ti 50 of which I own three. I don't think I'll ever switch to another racquet and I don't understand why anyone would play with anything else. We should all play with the RD-ti 50, have some cocktails, dance the mambo, and then go naked on the roof. ;)

ahhhh.....you are a Connoisseur of tennis rackets Lakoste for spotting the Kneissl White Star.

The White star is a very interesting racket. The sweet spot is tiny and located very low in the stringbed, towards the throat of the racket. It is very flexible around the upper hoop. It actually vibrates literally when you hit it, as if the racket was made of rubber:)

It has so much flex, a little more than I'm use to. It was my Dad's racket and was given to me.

1. Both classic mid and prestige play very similar. I can't tell any difference at all. Both are great rackets.

2. I put water marks on the pics so everyone will know that the pics were taken by POGO from POGOLAND so I will have credit for the pics when/if someone uses my pics:)

Hhahah thanks for the offer, but no thanks :). The rad 98s are my favorite radicals of all, as you can see why I have four of them :)
LOL Well it was worth a shot! I have two MID+s & looking for more. Radical '98 is my holy grail.

POGO,

I wonder if one of the four Wilson Pro Staffs you have is a St. Vincent?? The one that says "MIDSIZE." If so, is it in EXACTLY the same mold as the later versions??

Thanks.

Yes, the one with the "MIDSIZE" is in fact a St. Vincent Model. It is not the same mold as the other three newer models I have. The three newer PS 6.0 85s are Chinees made, one with black buttcap and two with white buttcap similar to the St. Vincent model.

The St. Vincent is noticeably heavier.

I take it your first choice is the RD7 and after that it's POG. Then you got the 85s and the Prestiges and etc! At least sell one of them to the dude!
POGO, I thought you were a nice person

Here is a closer look at the PS 6.0 85 I have. One is a St. Vincent and the other three are chinees made. There are differences with the Chinese made. One has a black handle and it dosent' say Prostaff 6.0si, but rather Prostaff 6.0.

Can you tell which one is the St. Vincents?
