Is it electric or electronic?

What is the make and model?

Does it have BIT test that checks the calibration each time you turn it on?

rich is correct. It depends on the machine. My machine, electronic, self calibrates each time it is turned on, as it goes through a check list of machine checks, and calibration is one of them. When I first got the machine, I checked the calibration weekly, then monthly, now it hardly ever gets checked, as it was always correct. Last month I checked it and it was months (maybe a year), since it was last done, and it still was spot on.So I guess the self calibration works, or seems that way with what I have.
Each machine is different. All I can say the self calibration with the machine I have seems to be functional.
Irregardless, with a new machine even if self calibrated, I would check it when you get it to be sure it left the manufacturer set up properly , and recheck it every so often. I guess I should still be checking mine more so than what I do, but so far I never had to do any recalibrating with it.Does no harm to check every so often.

I think you need to check it. Check the owner's manual to see if any calibration is available.

I agree that it depends on the machine.
I had a 2086 for a few year's, which self calibrated (I believe jim refers to it) and always seemed to be spot on.
That being said, I still always checked it after 20 or 30 frames. (I guess I'm a little OCD about it)
I check my star 5 every 4th or 5th time I clean clamps (25/30 frames) AND when i string at very low tension (racquetball frames) or high tension (a couple customers request 75lbs)

^same here. I check calibration about every 20-30 frames, or when I clean the clamps, rails, etc.
