Rafter did, Björkman did, Edberg did, Korda did, Kafelnikov did and so did Stich.
Basically they wanted to focus in singles more as they thought their chances were greater there. Other than that, maybe they just see doubles as a filler perhaps?

Maybe they just wanted to maximize their chances of becoming great singles players. They might have been afraid of injuries, exhaustion etc.

Hardcourts are much more prevalent today, particularly compared to the 1970s and earlier when three slams were on grass and one on clay, which also meant the tune-up tournaments preceding were on those surfaces. Harder on the body, so I think players are limiting their play more. Also, the volley is less featured in the game than it once was, so doubles skills don't carry over to singles as much as they once did.
