Interesting fact I came across today. He was 0-for-2010 in Grand Slams last year, failing to win a single match -- yet ranked #24. Anybody know of anyone who has been ranked higher without winning a single Slam main draw match?

Well considering he hurt himself at the FO and withdrew from Wimbledon its not that big of a surprise

Gulbis was playing good tennis before he injured his leg at the French Open, unfortunate thing to happen.

Things were turning around for him last year before the injury. Finally I saw some seriousness in his play. Before that time he acted like it was just a pickup game at the park.

He needs to find a mean game face, smiley's won't do.

Wasn't a good year for Gulbis at the slams no doubt. Played Monaco at AO which is tough, injury hurt him at French and Wimby, don't remember his USO. Ranking doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot for Gulbis though, can beat anybody when he's on (FO 2008, USO 2007, Rome last year), but can lose to anybody when he's in goober mode.

I feel he's gonna break the top 20 & certainly improve on his slam results considerably this year.

I dont think OP was hating on Ernie necessarily. it is pretty odd to have 0pts at the slams and still be ranked almost in the top 20. He could move huge in the rankings with just a couple 3rd and 4th round appearances

Yeah, I think that's what will happen. Yeah, OP is cool.

Gulbis will be alright as soon as he gets an attitude.

Ya he could get to top ten one day but waiting for him to grow up and have a battle with Novak like the FO 2008!

anyone with a top class BH and poor FH doesnt do too well. i guess the game favors FH hitters.

Interesting story. But what does it have to do with Gulbis?

Good point about the ranking.

Both him and Nalbandian should be major movers after the AO.

It will be very interesting to see Gulbis and Nalby perform at the AO.

If Nalby is in form I could see him as a possible spoiler for Nadal or Fed if Nalby can manage to get lucky and win in straights. In 4 sets his chances go down dramatically and in 5 I give him no chance.

Well Gulbis has the one of the best dhbh among pros but its a shame his FH lets him down on important points

I think it is his footwork. He seems to get lazy on his forehand side and swats at the ball sometimes. He can hit a monster forehand when he is in proper position.

I disagree about attitude as well. I definitely sensed some presence when he met Nadal in Doha. Unfortunately he couldn't back it up. Poor shot selection allowed Nadal to force him into bad positions all match long. Incidentally, I think this is why Davy does well against Nadal and not Federer. Federer is a brilliant ball striker that defies percentage tennis while Nadal is grinding court tactician which is a similar style to Davy.

it certainly isnt mechanics. i have seen him hit fh up close and its just insane how he crushes it. he probably cant keep it in

Shouldn't be a big surprise he has inconsistent results overall he plays the most aggressive style on tour.

It isn't just the aggression in his baseline play it is his return of serve and his own second serve.

Super aggressive play doesn't lend well to consistency overall, but it is what is needed to beat the top players in the world when the chance arrives.

His ranking will always be up and down playing his current style.

His ranking ain't gonna anywhere but south.
Too many points to defend by too much inconsistency.
