what if, entering a slam, two players had the same amount of ranking points to make them #32 in the world. what determines which of them gets seeded?
when 2 players have the same amount of points, there is a procedure to break the tie:
E. Ties.

When two or more players have the same total number of points, ties shall be broken as follows:
1) the most total points from the Grand Slams, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 mandatory tournaments and Barclays ATP World Tour Finals main draws, and if still tied, then,
2) the fewest events played, counting all missed Grand Slams, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments and Barclays ATP World Tour Finals they could have played (as described under A. above) as if played, and if still tied, then,
3) the highest number of points from one single tournament, then, if needed, the second highest, and so on.
(from the ATP rulebook (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Corporate/Rulebook.aspx))

seems so... look at the current rankings (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.aspx?d=10.01.2011), for instance:
#75: Clement, Arnaud (FRA), 627 pts, including 280 points at slams & M-1000 (total events: 34)
#76: Mello, Ricardo (BRA), 627 pts, including 132 points at slams & M-1000 (total events: 21)
but if you dive into the abyssal depths of the rankings (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.aspx?d=10.01.2011&c=&r=1501), you'll find a lot of unbroken ties ! http://uo.stratics.com/pics/yellowtail_barracuda.gif
