Don't you know, ESPN news anchors are all ex-frat boys. The only sports they truly know are American Football, Baseball and Beer Pong. These guys aren't the brightest guys in the world.

Something wrong with liking Football and Baseball, or were you just attempting to bash American sports? Either way, actually a lot of them are rather smart and regularly make references to things outside the realm of sports (most of which probably fly over your head), maybe it is you who needs a bit of schooling.

If this is truly the case, I must now put my foot in my mouth.

You would think, however, that if the correct pronunciation was indeed "Seemo," it would've been corrected by now. It's not Like Simon in a new name on tour. He's been there a while.

I know French pretty well, and "See-Mo" is the closest way you could write out how it sounds in English because you prounonce the "N" on the end in a different and more subtle way which couldn't be expressed through text.

That "n" at the end is very faint yeah.

In other words you just made yourself look like a dumbass.

as far as pronunciation of a foreign name on espn, it wasn't that bad. you should see how they butcher the names of football (soccer) players when they decide to show a highlight. most times, they can't even pronounce the name of the team!

having said that, most of the espn guys are very knowledgeable. they really know their stuff. the mispronouncing of names is not specific to espn. but i do think it's a bit lame that they can't send some low-paid intern to do a little research on how to say someone's name before going on air and butchering it. it would only take a second, and it would save you looking like a doofus.

in the real world, if you mispronounce the name of a client/guest/customer/whatever, it can really be a poor reflection of you, professionally.

This. Simon is a last name in my extended European family, a mixture of French and German heritage (right along the border actually). It is pronounced Seeee-mone or Seee-mo by some members of the family. Some of the hard core old school French hating Bavarians pronounce it Simon out of spite.

So yeah, thread fail. Also, pretty sure the ATP published pronunciation guides for the players on their website as part of their player profiles. Might want to check that in the future.

A Frenchman pronouncing Mr. Simon's full name.
http://www.forvo.com/word/gilles_simon/

I assume that he has also grown accustomed to the American pronunciation of 'cy-mon'

No matter what, he gets a lot of love from Mr. Nadal

the i should be a little 'shorter' than 'ee' but it's the same tone/sound. There's no N at the end. The o should b, how do you say, as the o in pong. Not an o like in phone. If he did that, his pronounciation is a lot better than most English speaking people.
