I know one function of power pads is to lessen the angle of the string in the grommets/holes. But do you think Fed and Pete use them for other reasons? What else do power pads provide?

Impact absorbtion, deaden the mains vs. no pads.

With power pads, you can hit great serves while down break point.
They also enable you to shank the heck out of a backhand.
They are really good for injury prevention.
They give you deceptive movement and a lot of the benefits of 'roids, except they do not adversely affect the family jewelry.

Kidding. Kiteboard's right. Also, they can sometimes help with durability if you are using gut mains and you hit some shots down near the bridge by accident.

I can see Pete using them for durability but not Fed. Why do you think Federer uses them?

Honestly, I just think he is used to it.
Also, I don't really hit that hard and I notice softer feel AND better durability on the mains with the leather pads in.

well its sort of a dampener so maybe that??

It's really not that effective as a dampener. I used them once when I strung with gut mains and it had little effect on dampening...

well fed uses gut in the mains, so its probably the same reason as sampras

I think that Federer just uses them so his mind can be at ease. He takes just about every possible precaution he can to ensure that his strings will not break.

I use then in my prestige classics with the gut in the mains and if feels like there's more power.

I have used them in PS85s for years and a little while ago got a restring done without them. It was the same tension/string as usual but felt way more harsh.

I doubt powerpads add any noticeable amount of power but they sure make tighter tensions especially feel a hell of lot softer.

Federer no doubt uses them out of habit. They're what he's used to - easy to continue with what you know that go for pointless change.

so he doesnt have to worry about his dampner flying off his racquet.

Power pads is the 20th century´s answer to woofer system

According to this guy, who makes youtube videos, powerpads that were meant to increase durability in the main for the friction to the string caused by wooden rackets, are used today in place of a dampener.

Ive always hated using dampeners since it reduces the feel of the racket, but the vibrations are not something tennis players like to feel. So federer uses power pads instead of shock absorbers which inturn also makes the racket more aerodynamic and frankly just makes the racket look cooler IMO

What else do power pads provide?I 've heard they provide better ball pocketing, keeping the ball in the strings longer. It doesn't seem plausible though.

One time Mary Pierce was on the Tennis Channel talking about how she likes having power pads on her frame. She says she has no idea what they are for. She giggles after saying maybe it gives her more power.

Power Pads and tubing were used in all string jobs with wood and early graphite sticks....some of the Pro's (like Sampras and Pierce) were Jrs in the 80s and always had them strung that way. It not some secret that will do anything as todays frames just don't need them....if you think you gotta have it buy Babolat as Woofer Technology nothing more than plastic power pads.

There is a legitimate argument for them helping vibration...
