When people say you should snap your wrist to get more power on a serve, do they mean snap it back to front or side to side? I use a continental grip on my serves with no backswing (right hand).

Its more like up down motion.. Palm facing forward and then palm facing down.

Don't snap your wrist at all.

i agree... in my experience, don't get fixated on this definition of pronation. i think it leads you in wrong direction.... i think snap is better and snap over the top or top corner of ball.....just snap the most natural way you would.

I know what you are saying, Rickson, and we have been through this a number of times before. We all agree that one should not force a "snapping" motion, however, we also agree that there needs to be a fast rotation of the wrist to impart spin and power. To an untrained player just learning such a service motion, this is a snap. If you are going for a topspin serve, the wrist will not automatically pronate such as to give topspin, you need to make your wrist go through that motion. To simply say there is no "wrist snap" at all in a serve is just ludicris, no offence. But the server does need to do something to drive the racket through the ball on serve. Hopefully we can get over this little controversy on the wrist snap, and when someone asks about such, just accept the fact that that is the best way for someone learning the shot to explain/describe/practice it.

Now, to get to the question, it depends on what type of serve you are going for, but a forward wrist snap will produce more power. However, this is not the best way to get added power. Legs, trunk rotation, and weight transfer are much more effective in giving power to a serve. The wrist snap is mostly used to produce the desired spin and direction for the serve. The flat serve is pretty much the only time I can think of where one would really only want forward motion of the wrist, which does have the most power.
