John McEnroe has an 84.18% winning percent on carpet. Is he the best ever. Bring back the carpet! Who would be the best on carpet now?

How is it possible to play on a carpet surface? Is that some kind of cheap version of tennis, just lay down a bunch of rugs everywhere?

What you talking bout willis? What do you think grass is? Or even clay? Find a patch of grass, play on it. You cannot be serious!

But how can you move quickly on it? You can't slide, it's really rough, bits of the fibre of the ball will stick to it...

you learn to run and change direction well? bad movement = done for. its not that rough, the carpet is pretty short and if the fibers of the ball were sticking to it then it wouldnt be as fast as it is.

Carpet is a fast surface? Why?

Wouldn't it be slower due to friction...?

What tournaments are played on carpet?

its faster than grass, slower than wood (usually converted real tennis courts).

Nothing is played on carpet anymore, the atp removed it a few years back.

No idea, maybe because its hard on the players because of its speed ect. Paris was played on carpet along with a few other events here and there. safin won paris 3 times! On the protour thats all,but you can get wooden courts in england which are Real Tennis (a diffent sport) courts conbverted into tennis courts. You can get blaes http://www.falcon-club.co.uk/FalconImage1.jpg which is like tiny little stones, horrible to play on, bounce can go anywhere. You can actually get third gen tennis courts now too, which is like grass with black rubber in it http://www.kestrelcontractors.co.uk/images/SundorneSynthetic60mm3G.jpg, similar to the old articfical grass which used sand and was less like grass but is still more comman http://www.egtsc.org/Photos/Tennis_Panorama2%20%5B640x480%5D.jpg

have you ever played a tournament on carpet? I can tell you it's super fast.

the reason for this it's because it's slick and not that hard. because of that the ball is not deflected up so much on the bounce and most of the energy goes forward. the ball "slips" a little and goes very flat and fast.

A hardcourt also seems to be slick, but because of the hardness the ball bounces quite high which means more of the energy of the ball goes into the upward bounce making it a little slower.
that's why hardcourt is slower (and much higher bouncing which helps with passing shots against a net rusher).

Why did they remove it? Was there a 'carpet season'? What other surfaces were there...?

they made the courts slower because the matches (like ivanisevic becker) where extreme acefests with hardly any rallies.

I would like some carpet tournaments though.

Roger Federer record on carpet 50–19 for a 72.5% winning percentage
Last final he played on carpet was year end in Shanghai in 2005 losing to Nalbandian in 5 close sets.

Ralph is 2–6 for a 25% winning percentage.

That might be the reason?

McEnroe is the most accomplished indoor player during the Open Era. He has 51 official indoor titles and he faced a lot of greats in the process.

I mean I was thinking about it with his serve. But, the guy has no ground game. I think a lot of players would stick out their racquet to return the serve and Ivo wouldn't be able to do anything with it. Plus, there is no way he'd ever break anyone. The big man has no movement at all. He might be a contender to make a quarterfinal if a GS were on carpet, but nothing more. I just don't see it happening. It would be sweet if they would just have one huge tournament on carpet; that way we can validate our assumptions.

Actually it's better. I'd rather not have played a match than bend over 4 times.

Furthermore, the thread topic is who do you think would be the best now, obviously carpet is not really used anymore so we can't judge most current players on the surface as they do not have any matches held on it.

Best carpet court players (CC players)

1) Becker
2) Mac
3) Sampras
4) Krajicek
5) Stich
6) Goran
7) Fed
8) Safin
9) Edberg
10) Rafter
11) Leconte

I would not even consider Ralph, no? The other guys on the poll who might be good on carpet might be: Sod, Berdych, Raonic, Dolgo, maybe Delpo.

Borg never had to play to the big servers of late 80's and 90's as he left the sport in 1982. I dont think he would have done very well against Goran, Becker, Sampras, Stich, and Krajicek and a fast surface like carpet.

Connors perhaps should be considered. But, then did Connors win those titles? I'd bet they were prior to the coming of the "power" era (c. 1984-1985).

Lendl, I forgot to include him- yes he should be in the top 5 or 6.

Safin seemed tough on carpet when I saw him; I didnt research his winning percentage on carpet; I got other sh*t to do- I work for a living. I was thinking more form an intuitive sense who had a good skill set for fast. carpet tennis and who I saw that seemed effective on that surface. Leconte seemed dangerous on carpet, and Rafter- perhaps they can be left off. Let's see your list- Hall of Famer.

How is it possible to play on a carpet surface? Is that some kind of cheap version of tennis, just lay down a bunch of rugs everywhere?

Indoor "carpet" refers to the rubberized suspended surface that they rolled out onto the floor of an indoor arena. It wasn't like the "carpet" you have in your living room. It was rolled onto the floor and it had seems that had to be tacked down, and was rolled up again and carried away. It wasn't a "rug" and really not too different from some of the faster indoor surfaces we play on today.
