Not much difference, is there? Both are predictable and the results of both are always the same. Nadal wins and the paint dries. Where's the suspense? Yawn......

His footwork and shot patterns are beautiful. He's one of the few people I enjoy watching on clay.

Well, although I find watching nadal verrrrrrrrrrrrry boring, its better than paint drying.......

However, the players I like to watch most, (Federer, Gonzales, Dimitrov), have a lot of things in common: an attackng game, a net game, and a one handed backhand. But that just me. I know someone who lovvvvvvvvvvvves to watch nadal play, because it shows extreme athleticism or something...

There was no suspense for awhile there when Fed was dominating grass and hard courts for the most part of 2004-2007. Yet, it was still entertaining to watch.

If you truly enjoy watching tennis, the results shouldn't matter. It's the tennis being played on court that matters (since you only mentioned results as the reason why it's "boring").

Ya, but Fed is the most entertaining/ aesthetic player to watch ever, so it was awesome. It was like, he beat people without trying.

But Federer did get pushed on both grass and hard courts during those years. Guys like Roddick and Nadal pushed him on grass, and guys like Safin and Agassi pushed him on hardcourts. Nadal just rolls over his opponents on clay. The matches aren't even close.

Besides, Federer has a FAR MORE beautiful game to watch than Nadal. As a Federer fan, I'd much rather watch Federer lose a match than watch any Nadal match, win or lose, just due to the sheer beauty of Federer's game. It's a joy just to watch his strokes, tactics, footwork, fluidity, and creativity. :)

Watching paint try. It's really amusing when a can of paint tries to win Roland Garros and always paints the lines (bad pun intended) but loses lol

If the grass actually grew behind the baseline on Centre Court during the Wimbledon fortnight instead of being stomped into clay as it usually does, Nadal wouldn't have any Wimbledon titles.

So, yeah, I guess watching grass grow is better than watching paint dry. ;-)

Well...fed had been much more dominant for quite a while and nobody had said anything....guess it's cus of his "aesthetically pleasing" game...or what you call double standards...

I don't get the haters on this board. The player wins you bash him, the player loses you bash him, the player gets injured you bash him, the player gives a slightly more conservative interview you bash him, as if his mere existence is the greatest evil on earth. Comeon, he may not have the "classic" game some of you posters like, but you gotta appreciate the guy for being the best tennnis player currently...

The standard TT trend it seems is to hate dominant players while they're active then pine for those "good old days" once they've gone.

Threads like these are only slightly better than watch paint dry. In fact the only reason I'm replying to this thread is because I'm waiting for my Tipp-Ex to dry...

Nadal is more exciting on clay than federer is on grass.

Don't be ridiculous. Quality tennis is way more exciting than just watching Nadal out grind his opponents. All he does is playing safe, being consistent, waiting them to make mistake. It's too easy, and too basic. EVen the serve isn't much(if any) of a factor. On grass playing war of attrition isn't that so simple. There isn't any pusher winning on grass...you have to be offensive minded. GRass required more skills, more shot selection, and hence more exciting.

I said periods of dominance, not all the time. If you look at almost all his matches on the fast courts before Nadal came to the scene, he had matches were he brutalized his opponents time and again. He was still entertaining to watch however. ;)

I guess my point is, it's not so much the results, but it's more about the style of tennis played on court. So yeah, Federer's style is very entertaining. :)

I do appreciate that Nadal is a never say die fighter and such a great competitor, and that he's also a pretty nice and humble guy. But like others have said, I just don't enjoy watching him play tennis. It's like watching a bull in a china shop and can get quite annoying at times. His strokes are just...well...ugly, and his loud grunting is a major turn-off. There are lots of people who feel the same way. That's why Federer fans will always outnumber Nadal fans.

Also, in every sports, fans are more interested in watching offense than defense. Tennis is no exception.

I like Nadal but I agree watching him on clay against anybody not named Djokovic or Federer can be very dull. I'm hoping guys like Del Potro, Soderling and Murray can provide a good challenge for Nadal as well since I do really find it boring when he steamrolls on clay.

So Rafa's a pusher, who with his zero skill pusher non-skills, won Wimbledon twice, and once against the offensive-minded, skillful, shot selection-creative Federer.

Seems to me that Federer isn't playing good tennis; he's playing pointless tennis, if with all his almighty skills, he's losing to a guy who spams easy, elementary tactics.

Also for Fed to consistently lose to this guy, he must be clinically-********. Oh wait...

I'd rather watch snails f%ck than watch nadal shoot moonball after moonball at the same spot (to backhand).

99% of his shots are:

Forehand: cross court
Backhand: cross court

or when he runs around backhand he goes inside out 99.99% of the time.

If he's playing federer its even easier to predict:
100% serves to backhand.
99.999% moonballs to backhand.

Soderling vs. Nadal in 2009 was exciting. That was the year when the clay in Paris was really fast. Soderling was able to hit some pretty amazing shots. So did Del Potro. Lots of offense dislayed by the players including Fed and Haas. Ivo set the record for most aces. It was the best FO year I've ever seen.

I'm talking about strictly on clay. Of course he plays different from other surfaces. Remember this thread is about clay. And when Nadal is on this surface, he will play the kind of game that has been successful for him since 2005, and that is playing the "war of attrition". Stay error free, wait until the other players weared out, or loses interest. If it doesn't break, don't fix !

And his tactic against fed is always the same...going after his bh and avoid his fh. Hope that Fed just make mistake b/c he has a one handed bh. I mean every match is the same. And hence, he is so predictable, which is the reason why of the OP's point...Nadal is boring b/c there's nothing new.

Even on clay, I don't think he's outright boring as many would have you believe ITT. He moves better on clay so his defensive skills really shine through. True, it only serves to make the outcome of the match even more predictable, but I don't understand how anyone can find those shots where he hits outrageous shots from defensive positions (eg while running off the court and into the stands) as winners, boring.

Of course I've lost to pushers before. But how is that relevant to what I said?

Maybe you should read that thread on player types again because Rafa definitely doesn't fit the definition of a pusher.

Hitting loopy shots and being good at defence doesn't make a player a pusher automatically, otherwise by that definition Fed would be one too.

You're telling me that Wimbledon 08 and AO 09 were boring? Maybe you like watching paint dry more than you give it credit for.

Nadal seems able to get a lot of angle on his whipped forehand crosscourt and even if he gets a dtl return he can run across and hit a winner. That's not easy and its not textbook as it means you risk being out of position continually.

Quality tennis? You are serious? You may not enjoy that style, but to contend that is not quality tennis and he is just playing it safe and grinding it out is silly. No tournement winner can just grind it out, he has immense weapons.

I think Federer is fun to watch, but to believe his tennis has more "quality" is pretty funny. Flashy, yes, better, it appears no.

I think Joker is the boring one, I really dont enjoy watching him much, but that guy can play.

Gasquet is my favorite player to watch, but I dont think he has better quality tennis, just fun for me to watch. There is a difference.

Not entirely true. I've been watching tennis (casually) for 2-3 years now and only b/c my dad lives and breathes the game. For a long time, I only knew about 4-5 strokes and they all looked the same to me. A forehand was a forehand and a backhand a backhand. I am proud to say that, I can now recognize about 10 different shots, lol, however, I still can't pick up on subtleties. But I watch because I love the competitive spirit of sport, it's exciting. It's also a lot easier to follow and understand than American football.

Rafa really brings that competitive spirit to life. Even when he's playing noobs, he'll come on court with a lot of intensity. He'll pump his fist and shout "vamos", and that's really really fun. The only Rafa matches I either don't watch or don't enjoy watching are the ones where he looks like he has no focus and is somewhere else mentally. I also know that I am hardly alone. At least in the US, most people yawn long and hard when you mention tennis, it's basically a hop, skip and jump away from golf. BUT they love competition, they love the fight and that certain aggression Rafa brings on court. They don't appreciate the strokes or the fluidity of movement, the nuances that people who play it or have watched it for a long time do.

Actually, I think Nadal won a lot of fans last year. I mean how often does it happen, that a major sportsman get's injured like that and not only comes back, but comes back the way he did? That's insane. I think even a lot of his fans were convinced he was never gonna be the same player again, it takes some serious mental strength to come back like that. I had this very conversation with a person on the train last September. I was going home from school and they had just returned from a day at the Open. I asked them how they liked it, and how they were liking NY etc. Then, I asked who they were rooting for, and they said Rafa. They said it was because it would just be such a fairytale after he was almost written off. So maybe traditional tennis fans will enjoy Fed more, but Rafa has attracted a lot of casual fans. Not to mention, the guy can play tennis, which means he also has a huge fan following in the tennis community. Plus, I don't see why people need to pick one or the other. You can be a fan of both of them.

As for the OPs question, I'd much rather watch Nadal on clay! :)

2 or 3 games is about all I can stand, that takes around 45 minutes, nothing more boring than watching Nadal do his routine on clay.

On clay he adds cleaning the damn baseline off after every point, God forbid if he doesn't clean it every point, a close call could go against him.

I may actually watch an entire match once Madrid starts, but it wont be for the tennis alone.

I agree, Nadal always wins, so there is no suspense. Federer is much more enjoyable to watch - never know what kind of shank or whiff is coming off (or goes by) his racquet or what the outcome will be of an epic battle against a pathetic career journeyman loser like Melzer.

Here's my top ten:

1. Watching paint dry
2. Reading your threads
3. Watching Melzer play on clay
4. Watching circus clowns
5. Watching Federer play on clay
6. Watching Greta van Susteren play on clay
7. Watching movement of tectonic plates
8. Watching evolution
9. Watching Carbon-14 through its half life
10. Watching Nadal play on clay

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Film/Pix/pictures/2008/09/22/simple_jack_poster460.jpg

Watching Nadal on clay is like watching lightweight fighters go at it landing 1000 shots and causing zero damage and the fight goes to a decision. Watching big hitters on grass is like a heavyweight fight where anything can happen. Even a low ranked fighter has a puncher’s chance and every shot can lead to a KO blow. That’s excitement.

I like Nadal for his determination and fighting spirit but after awhile.. it's quite boring.. same old thing.. back hand whoopi cross court, forehand heavy spin jumps up.. grind the opponent to death.. I rather like watching Almagro, Raonic some new youngster with new style of play..

fb = facebook. Also, both my parents, and all their bro/sisters/aunts/uncles are on facebook. They don't live in the United States either. Let me be morbid here, those people that are too old to be on facebook, a good portion of them with not me around for much longer. In which case your theory of Fed will always have more fans than Rafa falls apart. Anyway, why am I even going back and forth with you? Bottom line: No Fed will not always have more fans than Rafa.

Despite looking more aesthetical, Fed's game and on-court demeanor lack intensity of Nadal's. Sometimes Fed even looks bored out there on the court, so watching him between points is more boring, and it's a big amount of time. In Federer's shots there is more unexplainable/ god-given,
in Nadal's - practiced, deserved. To enjoy Fed's game you don't have to know anything about tennis, it just looks spectacular. To enjoy Rafa's you have to think the game, to know it's phisics.
I like 'em both :)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally Federer's game leaves me cold, which doesn't mean that I can't appreciate his achievements.

From Roger Federer (May 2047)

I created and sent back from the future a cyborg Terminator named No-hack Jock-o-Itch in order to take care of the scourge named Rafa Nadal. However, V1.0 (codename Joker) crashed a lot, overheated, and even retired mid-match, and it took us 2 years to come out with V2 (codename The King). We thought it was perfect : it wiped out Nadal and the entire ATP, but sadly, creamed even Me (RF). Mirka and I are tweaking his logic circuits. If we succeed, he will fail, but only against me. Otherwise, bye bye Fedal.

Sadly, No-hack became sentient a year back, and created a version of me named ********, and sent him back in time. Thus, all the matches you are currently seeing are not between Novak and me, but No-hack and ********. (No-hack also did a naughty trick with Nadal for kicks but I won't go into that.)

Sincerely,
Roger

Note to Ministry: Someone is exterminating all the TW trolls I am sending back in time. Can someone look into this.

Breakpoint has already admitted in this thread that watching pornographic movies is one of his main interests in life. I'm not surprised to hear it though, because he's the kind of person anyone, not just girls, find repulsing so he has to resort to porn. Anyways, who's your favorite porn actress, Breakpoint? :)

The reason I like to watch Rafa play is to enjoy how he humiliates others. There are players who start the match thinking "I will approach the net" or "I will flatten out my shots and crush him" or "I have a more elegant game". Then all their strategies fail when they simply cannot get a ball past him. In frustration, they start overhitting and cursing themselves.

It is the case of the club player who will not admit that in spite of all his lessons and clinics and drills, he is just not as good as the pusher he loses to every time. So he shows up here complaining about pushers. Same thing happens to Nadal's opponents. They realize they are just not good enough and all their training isn't helping, and they get angry.

No, he is to pros what the pusher is to club players.

He is not a backboard, but a mirror.

He reveals what the opponent truly is (i.e., not very good).

He is the guy who exposes the weaknesses and crushes the ego. His jumping during the coin toss, his celebration after wins, and his pseudo Humbalito comments are like rubbing salt on the wound.

I'd rather watch Nadal play on clay because then I'm at least doing something i find enjoyable, which is watch tennis. However as a cook I find it a lot more enjoyable to watch a soufflé in the oven as it either rises to perfection or just fails. But then I'm still at school and I didn't make them, but it's always fun to watch. That would describe Federer's game really. Mix ingredients together at a young age, put in oven for a few years, take them out when in its prime, forget about it (assuming no one has ever eaten Federer) and slowly fall.

Its his style. How does it feel Nad *****, almost 50% of the tennis watchers would rather watch paint dry than your beloved butt pirate?

Actually it feels great. The fact that Nadal leads is enough to convince me that people's attitudes toward him have changed. A while back it would be all about the paint. Or perhaps I am garnering false hope, and the difference is thanks to a majority of the butt hurt *******s avoiding these boards.

Unlike pathetic Federer, great Nadal doesn't care about the year-end hardcourt sidekick circuit - just flies in to collect huge appearance fees.
"Appearance fees"? Nadal doesn't get squat for showing up at the Shanghai Masters! It's a MANDATORY tournament! Unless, of course, you fake an injury and excuse yourself. And we all know Nadal is the master at faking injuries, don't we?

Oh, and do you seriously think Federer cares about Monte Carlo? He doesn't even show up half the time.

Yes, Nadal cares about the hardcourt tournaments. In fact, he's desperate to win the year-end WTF to complete his resume. Unfortunately, he's just not good enough to win it and gets spanked year after year.

Well Lsmkenpo guessed correctly, I am no fellow. As far as TTW being a representative sample of how people feel, that it is not. Based on how a certain player is doing a majority of his fans will be around. There is about 20% objectivity in these polls, rest is fanboyism. So while they may be fun, I can't help but chuckle at BP taking them seriously.

If he actually cared, he would have won, wouldn't he have?

He's also skipped it many years. It 2009, he planned to skip it to get married but only got a wildcard at the last second because he decided to get in some practice on clay, so of course, he lost to Wawrinka in the 2nd round. That was the ONLY time he has EVER lost to Wawrinka in 9 matches. Pretty much tells me that he didn't care.

Brilliant. This is like the Nadal is tired whenever Nadal loses.

When Fed loses, it's because he didn't care. It's probably the genius in him.

Fed also lost 3 RG finals. He did not care about RG either.

Here he is not caring:

Of course, he cares about RG. It's a Grand Slam. You know, a Major. When he retires, everyone is going to know if he won RG or not. No one will care nor remember if he ever won Monte Carlo. Heck, Monte Carlo is not even a mandatory tournament. That's why he's skipped it many times. Has he EVER skipped RG? Um...nope.

When Federer is 8-1 vs. Wawrinka and also 8-1 vs. Gasquet and the ONLY place he has EVER lost to both guys is at Monte Carlo, it's pretty clear to anyone who actually understands logic that he doesn't really care about Monte Carlo.

Correct, just like Nadal didn't care about Wimbledon in 2006 & 2007 which is why he lost the final. When he started to care about it in 2008, we saw what happened ... Roger Federer took home the runners up trophy! ROFL!
