Tennis channel is replaying wimbledon classics this week and I thought it was strange that they consider the 2004 women's final between Sharapova and Serena to be a classic. That match was such a dud. A straight set beatdown can't be considered a classic. They should have replayed the Venus vs Davenport final of 2005.

Amen, what a crazy match. They were really going at it.

I agree, this is lame. It's just because of the 'brands' (lol) Maria Sharapova vs. Serena Williams.

It could have also been a Home Shopping Network segment selling perfume.

My telly here in India (each year, in June) plays everything from the Borg vs Mac match (full 3 hours) to the matches of the last few years both mens and womens. So i don;t think you should single out any match.

Yes, now that you mention it there are a lot of Serena matches, incl one with Zheng in it.

What's even dumber is that they are only showing 30 mins of each match.

Davenport is taller than Sharapova.

Didn't know that.

And...

why do all the classic matches have to be in the finals? Many times, I find the semi-finals to be better. Like the Nole - Federer semi at the French this year vs the final...

The Venus - Sharapova semi of 2005 Wimbledon was a very good match.

It's the only Wimbledon final in the 21st century where a Williams played and a non-Williams won! ;-)

Serena played awful for her standards in that final. Not to take anything away from Maria who played one of her best matches ever and fully deserved to win Wimbledon that day, but with Serena's play that day it was far from one of the classics.

I agree with DR11 that the Wimbledon semis of 2005 between Sharapova and Venus was better. Also the 2005 Wimbledon finals between Venus and Davenport. And the 2005 Wimbledon semis between Davenport and Mauresmo was outstanding too. That was one of the best womens Wimbledons in recent memory.

If there was a classic in 2004 it was the semifinal between Serena and Mauresmo.

The 2006 Wimbledon final between Henin and Mauresmo was also great.

And of course the 2009 Wimbledon semis between Serena and Dementieva.

My pick is the 1977 semi between Borg and Gerulaitis, I own it. Actually they own the GMOAT IMHO. http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/Wimbledon_-_1977__Borg_v_Gerulaitis_DVD/descpageKULTUR-77MATCHDVD.html

Sharapova played great tennis. A major drubbing for a top player (eg. S. Williams) also can be a "classic".

Just take the 1992 Wimbledon final when Steffi crushed #1 Seles with 62 61.
A classic without any doubt!!
You can watch this match over and over again and still be suprised every time how superb Steffi played.

I saw this on tv last night and thought the exact same thing and was going to post about it. No epic comeback?

Well, 1992 was the only Wimbledon final of the 20th century where a Seles played and a non-Seles won.
And it was a classic!

You are right. It is not a classic.

Hingis vs Novotna 1997 Final was a good but overlooked match.

Surprised the Serena-Dementieva match from 2009 is one of the classics. Only because it was not a final.
