I know he hasn't majored yet (I'm sorry if I jinx you Rory), but the kid is playing some stupendous golf recently. He seems to have learned from his Sunday implosion at Augusta.

Can tennis be that far behind in the charisma chase? Who's gonna light up our stage and how soon will it be?

C'mon, he's had 3 shots at it already and hasn't won a set yet. McIlroy has had leads in his failures to close.

Tomic is still alive in the qualies...can he bust out? Is there a young McEnroe-like junior ready to explode on the scene? The Euros are dominating tennis (what was it, 14 of the last 16 at RG '11)...is there a stud junior from there ready to be the next giant? Please enlighten us if you can.

Unfortunately no one on the near horizon. It's basically between nadal, federer, djokovic, murray and jmdp for the next 2-3 years.

Let's see the kid win something first - then let's see if he can do that over and over again for a few years. Awesome 2 rounds but it takes 4 to win.

Rory like Murray are choke artist and I wouldnt be surprised to see Rory succumb to 3rd and 4th day meltdown

He's also a big Nadal fan :)

Rafa Nadal! What a man! Best sportsperson in the world in my eyes. Complete legend on and off the court.

The foursome of juniors...names, backgrounds, comparisons of games? Any help greatfully appreciated!

^^I don't think he's referring to any juniors. Notice he said "too early to name names." He's referring to nadal and friends to make semis.

I'm on the Dimitrov bandwagon for now, but he's got a long ways to go!

McIlroy is the biggest choker at the final stage...he outclasses Murray and that is saying too much. Watch McIlroy mess up his -6 lead ahead of everyone!

At least with Murray I can see him winning mulitple slams but McIlroy....the first one would be impossible! After what I saw at the British Open......my god....I can never see a lead ggo down so much!

McIlroy kept his foot on the throttle again today with a solid 68, extending his lead to eight shots. I like his chances to close tomorrow. Lesson learned at Augusta... Play to win, not play to avoid losing. Something Murray could learn from. BTW, McIlroy only held a first-round lead at the Open. He followed up a great round with a horrid second round in terrible weather conditions. It was Augusta I believe you were referring to with the final round 80.

Ya I was referring to the Masters.....I got mixed up. That was a sight to see....I was enjoying since I was rooting for a Tiger comeback which was almost possible with many of the bogey and double bogey chances tiger had in the bottom 9!

Though McIlroy messed up last time in the final stage...we will see if he can still be safe! Though if he wins....there might be hope for Murray at Wimbledon!

Would rather that Soderling or Berdy win a slam rather than this fool. One tournament wonder does not turn you into a legit slam contender.

What Rory did for four days was play to win, one shot after another. It's the equivalent of four matches with one dropped service game and breaking 50% of the time. Incredible!

This thread is stupid since tennis already has their heir apparent on top and another potential one in waiting. Those are Nadal, still barely 25, and Djokovic not quite yet 24. Those guys could be on top for many years to come, whey do you need someone after them which is potentially a long ways away. Federer as well, unlike Tiger, isnt done yet and could be near the top for several more years. There are some who probably think he could still return to #1, although I am not one of those. And while they have their skeptics Murray and Del Potro both could be argued as potential heir apparents too, and are only 24 and 22.

Tiger began his decline in 2008 with knee injury similar to Roger beginning his decline in 2008 as well. However tennis already saw its heir apparent take over #1 that year, while golf has had to wait 3 years for a worthy successor to finally emerge.

The point of the thread was to engage people as to the identity of the next giant in tennis. We know the ones on the top. They will hand off to a younger generation sooner or later. Who will that be and when? Is that so "stupid" to ask? I like Tomic's chances. Maybe you don't. State why and who you think is better suited. This is a forum for discussion, not ridicule!

The next superhero is someone we dont even know of yet, so many years away. Which with Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Del Potro, and Murray around for the next 4-6 years (well maybe not Federer) is just fine. Tennis wont need whoever he is anytime soon. Nobody we know of born from 1989-1992 is anywhere near good enough.

And you are right there is a big difference between the state of tennis and golf. Tiger being washed up now has only proven what a joke the rest of his era has been along, something that was overshadowed by Tiger himself. And the future isnt any brighter. There is only true future great emerging and he took many years to. Tennis today >>>>>>>> golf.

Nadal is a nice guy, Federer would have waited till Rory won multiple majors before befriending him and become part of Roger's 'special' group. Federer for some reason feels the need to attach himself to other high succesful athletes.

Is he a 1988-92er? I think so. He's on a nice roll right now...can he continue it here and in NYC?

Ditto Dmitrov...someone else mentioned him but I know less about him.

Crowning Rory the next Tiger is premature to put it kindly. He should first aspire to have a career such as Seve or Nick Faldo. Raonic seems to be someone the media has tagged to be the next great player in tennis, before he has even made the quarters of a GS.

Are you his spokesperson ??? You know every thought he thinks do you, smarty ??? You can say what you please about what Federer feels as though it is true. Do look up the word "opinion" in the dictionary some day.

His relationship with Tiger was based on their dominance at a period in time. I don't view it as something Roger waited to do...nor did Tiger. Likely Nike brought them together...

You really don't hear about Roger having famous friends. I think it's just his personality to stay out of the limelight off the court unless he's selling something.

Neither Seve (RIP) or Nick ever dominated a major in the fashion of '97 Masters (Tiger) or '11 USO (Rory). Yeah, it's his first major but certainly not anywhere close to his last. I'm not a golf writer so I don't "crown" anyone but the golf media have anointed Rory as the next superstar long before I penned this thread.

I think the Raonic hoopla had its roots from the void of North American tennis talent and the obvious game/physical parallels with Petros. I admit a bit of excitement whetted my appetite for the Canadian's success. We shall see if he can bounce back from this latest adversity.

Impressive 90 minutes of tennis today! We may know the identity of the tennis doppelgänger of Rory.
