View Full Version : Looking for a thin Poly

MethodTennis

Looking for a thin, cheap poly, to use eithher in a full bed or hybrid with synthetic gut.

Currently use blackcode 1.18mm but looking for something similar and cheaper.

All suggestions are welcome aside from RPM which is the worst string I have had the displeasure of using.

It plays nice, it has a lot of bite and spin, but it's got poor durability. I break full beds of it in about 5 hours. In a hybrid it should last longer since it won't have shaped string tearing farther into it.

Kirshbaum strings go down to 1.10 also. TW should carry at least some of them.

I said thin but i didnt mean it needed to by invisable! anying around 1.18-1.20 is great too.

TWE only have down to 1.15 but i might try it out, any thoughts on the Kirschbaum stuff?

thin polys lose tensions way faster than a thicker one. u can try golden set poly 18g. i've used 3 reels of it. be ready to cut it out after 3 sets. 17g's way better.

That's not necessarily true, I happen to love Super Smash. You just have to be careful not to leave it in your racquet too long. It's a string with a really solid response and phenomenal durability if you don't have arm problems.

Kinda misses the "cheap" creteria but might buy a set of it anyway just to try. Never know might be my string 'holy grail'!

Cyclone 18g has very long life + very good playability and super kind on the arm at and below 53lbs on a prestige... best returning string Ive ever used.

Mosquito bite is a good call... also Silverstring in 1.20 Lasts longer than the Big Hitter Blue.

+1 to those recommending Pro Super big ace Micro (1.15), and Weisscannon mosquito Bite (1.16). Along those lines is also Polystar Energy 17 (1.20), my favorite of the three, but it does not hold tension well after a few hours. WC-MB is the best for tension hold.

Would Mosquito Bite be jarring if I hit it flat? I have 18x20 racquets, so it would open the face for me. I hit with occasional spin, which I'd like it for. I might be better off with Silverstring though.

I will said try both, I never try Silverstring. From WC I used MB and I string for my wife Scorpion (power and spin since she need it). I hit windshield wiper style in the forehand and leave the flat shots when Im comfortable for winners and it has a good response at 48#'s(I play with a Dunlop Bio 200 lite). And my 1hbh is flat as well and it grabs very well. Doesn't Spin that much, but doesn't float neither if that make sense.

Regards.

I hit flat with a 18x20 racquet as well, and right now I am trying both SS and MB. Of course, MB is thinner, but I think I prefer SS right now.

SPPP 1.18 is sort of the beer budget Lux Ace. Not as nice, but a better value. Two others - Scorpion 1.22 and Polystar Strike 1.25 Both are crisp strings that "play thinner" than their specified gauges.

Glad to help. That's the route I took, along with Scorpion and B5E.

I tried Scorpion 1.22 @57 LO on an 18x20 95". At that tension it was very stiff and still too lively for my tastes. It seems to be very tension tempermental for feel, but maybe not so much for liveliness. I'd go down 2 pounds if I try it again.

I liked Cyber Blue 1.20 @56. Maybe a little too muted, but for the first time, I had the feeling of not having to adjust my stroke to compensate for the strings. That was cool.

mixedmedia

Going down a few pounds is a good option. It may take further adjustment, but is great once the proper tension is found.

Solinco Tour Bite 18g is my new favorite poly. I use the entire bed, so I'm not sure about a hybrid. As far as poly's go, I really like the feel of this string. I can hit drop shots and slices far better with this string and I can hit monster spin with it as well.

Of the 3, Head is the softest and most powerful, Prince is the stiffest and most durable, Gosen is the most playable( esp. the 17g fullbed in a 18x20)
PPS 18g works well as a hybrid with 18g poly. Lotsa power and spin at low tension.
