View Full Version : Anyone still use your racquet from the late 80s/early 90s?

Was wondering.
Just dug up my old Prince Graphite Pro 90 from about 15 years ago (90??? I took a 15 year journey away from the sport and I'm using a 98 now).
I must've been pretty good back then.

Thinking of restringing it and giving it a go.

I sure do. Wilson Ultra FBK 95

nice flex and feel.
Lighting fast to swing.
I wish I could find a modern day equalivant.
No luck yet. But trying.

ah got my dad's old racquet...i think it was the walmart racquet of the time though from early 90s id say, it's called the "Wilson Legacy" or something (sounds like a wal-mart racquet name). I use it as a backup-backup, hurts the arm a lot. :p

Use a Wilson Ultra FPK 85&95. Was using a Volkl CAT 1 FIRE but my hand and wrist kept flaring up.

All the time - my entire racquet collection is from the 80's (with a smattering from the 70's and 90's). I usually use a Rossignol F200 but have been playing with a Prince Magnesium 90 for a little while - and loving every minute of it!

And I'm still reasonably competitive.

Apart from Jimmy Connors I don't recall any other players using my favourite racquet - the Prince Precision Mono.

Funny that, of the 'classic' racquets, you still see pros using the Head PC600 but you dont see them swinging the PS85 or POG midplus (not that a lot used the POG midplus anyway). Perhaps, if the pros still think it is competitive today, then it shows we overinflate the greatness of the other two sticks.

I still use my Wilson Sting SC (Si Carbide) from time to time ...

I use my Head Graphite Edge TXE once in a while ...

And, eLterrible, if your Wilson Legacy was a real Legacy one, it was from very early 80's. It's a technological advancement at the time. It's wood with boron (or graphite don't remember) in-lays and has a long face. It was one of Wilson's flagship product at the time. Better keep it in good shape. A sure collector's item.

The Legacy came out only for a short time and then, I think, was overtaken by one of the first PWS systems use by Andreas Jagger (sorry if I spelled her name wrong). I forgot the name of the racket. I was about 14 at the time.

Anyone around here familiar with the "World Tennis Magazine"?

I've still got my Dunlop Max 200g's. They're fun to hit with.

I am still using my Wilson Pro Staff 4.5 95. I think this racquet came out in the late 80s though I didn't start using it until 93. I think I am going to buy a Babolat pure drive team standard in the next few weeks, though. After 13 years I guess it is time for a change....

I use POG when I play doubles. It is made in 1977-1979.

At the end of last summer, one of my customers switched from his Wilson Sting Mid, which I strung 77 times for this summer clay court player, to a Volkl Tour 10 MP.

I still play often with my Wimbledon Novas, particularly for doubles. The Nova goes back to 1991. I strongly like its weight, balance (about 2 pts HL) and feel; it has stood up to all the other racquets I have experimented with.

What's the problem with a racquet from Sports Chalet? The one in my area carries LM Prestige, Head Flexpoint Radical, O3 Tour, Wilson nSix-One, and some other nice frames.

Wow! Good to see there are still others using the Wilson Ultra FPKs!

I still have one in the closet (95 Sq. in.) never strung up with plastic on the handle. But that one will probably be for sale, as it probably now will play so much different than the old ones I am using. I figure the money I get for it will go for my replacement (right now either a Pro No. 1 or RDX 500).

I still use a Wilson Pro Staff 7.5, the blue/maroon version that Steffi used at one time late in her career. Great stick - can't find anything close to it but still searching.

It's my back up racket.

A couple of weeks ago I pulled out my old Kneissl White Star Masters 30. Have been playing great with it--love that solid feel.

(If anyone has an extra one in a 4 1/2, give me a holler)

K. Wilson Moose...I am envious! I've posted elsewhere on this site that my 'Holy Grail' racquet is the CTS Lightning 90...have you had it since it came out, or did you track it down somewhere? Do tell! I was sponsored by Prince in the early 90s, and unfortunately had to switch to the CTS Synergy DB 26 MP...not a bad stick, but there was something great about the Lightning...;-)

Currently I'm using a Wilson Hammer 5.2 95. not sure of its year, but i'd wager that it's early 90s. $10 at a junk store; one of my best buys ever!

Killer,

I actually purchased it off the TW classifieds. Solid as a rock, just plows through the ball with great control. I played with the CTS Approach 90 in the early 90s. I keep my eyes open for this series of frames.

Is the Wilson Hammer 5.2 95 the purple one? If so, that is what my son used and he still has one that he takes out from time to time.

Take care

K Wilson Moose...yep, that's the one...currently using it w/ Prince Syngut Duraflex @60. It's interesting to use a racquet that's actually head-heavy; a bit of a change from most of the Prince frames I've played with over the years! It's s solid racquet though, and even though I've actually hit with brand new Prince O3 Silver OS recently, I prefer my Wilson...bit more solid, and a hell of a lot more control!
Thanks for the info on the Lightning too; I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled ;-) Cheers

I just switched to Babolat Storms after using Prince CTS Approach 90 for the past 15 years and my game is a wreck...I have lost all confidence in hitting the ball so I think I am going back to it.

I still have an old Prince Pro (aluminum, not Graphite) that sits in my closet for when I have multiple racquets out for stinging. Luckily, I haven't broken all the other racquets at the same time and haven't actually had to play with it in many years. It was OK for it's time, but you can't go back to those relics.

I like this frame as well. I have one that is cracked, but I still love hitting with it.

I've found the original 6.0 95 to be very close, with the same old anemic upper hoop.

Do they carry Yonex, Dunlops, Fischers, Volkl and Pro Kennex rackets? Do they also carry the POG which is still available from Prince?

Do they also carry a full line of string selections?
