View Full Version : Head Heavier racket= More Strings broken???

I have noticed that when I play with a 13 ounce strung Head Radical Pro with all the added weight in the Head I break strings more often then in one of my stock Radical pros. I have the same string same tension I just break strings about 5 hours sooner with my weighted one than with my stock one. IS there a direct correlation with Head balance and string longevity?

Interesting question,...on the one hand i would think increased head speed of more HEADLIGHT could be more of a factor in string breakage,...on the other hand,...LESS headlight correlates with more plowthrough which, i suspect, could in turn correlate with more string breakage.:?

Out of curiosity, what is the balance on your HH 13oz. stick?

When I weighted it it was even balance, I have a thick heavy TW leather grip on the bottom. and I misspoke there is some lead tape on the handle.

It is normal/expectable . More mass will put more torque on the ball, ceteris paribus. More torque causes more stress on the strings hence less durability.

I just didnt think that a mere 1.5 to 2 ounces would make much of a difference. Im not sure what the stock specs are but i think its between 11.2 and 11.5 ounces strung.

Yep, more weight = more pressure on the strings.

That's why the ball starts to launch at higher angle with more weight, it digs deeper into the stringbed.

The reason it puts more stress on the strings is that a frame with more mass in the head deflects less when you strike the ball. So, since the frame doesn't twist or flex as much on impact, more of the force of the impact is absorbed by the strings, causing them to stretch more than on a frame with less mass in the head (all things being equal).

It's also the reason that string tension feels lower after adding a lot of weight in the head, even when it's not. It's simply the strings stretching more than they did before.
