Was this a response to the harshness of poly strings? When did people start doing this?

Don't know who or why specifically this started, but we use silicone as it is the easiest way to add permanent weight in the handle, and also provides a vibration dampening effect.

I have been using it for over 5 years, so I am sure that some of the more experienced customisers on here would have a more accurate answer.

For me, it started a long time ago when my father, (he's 70) used it to hold fishing weights (sinkers) in the handle, about 1970.

In wood racquets? Fiberglass was not out by then. Volkl, PDP, Yonex, and Fischer didn't start manufacturing until '72-'76.

Yes, it's called drill and fill, for you young guys.

Dude...unless your father had you as a young teen, you're younger than I. We were modifying wood sticks back in the '60's and early '70's, but they were done minimally, and my stringer was stringing for many Hall of Famer's.

does it really provide vibration dampening and what is typical amount of weight added.

Silicone definitely provides dampening. The amount of weight added is variable.

I know, and then not long afterwards they got signed to a major............. the early 90's were a very different time. These guys used to get played on MTV, now if it's not pro tooled and auto tuned ad nauseum you get bubkiss from the major outlets.

Yes..I walk into studios now and the drum parts were live room samples programmed by MIDI.

I have slithered off and wept the death of rock n roll more than once.

does silicone really change the weight

does silicone really change the weight

Yes, only 2 inches adds close to 10 grams. A full handle can be over 50 grams of extra weight.

It's a lot easier to modify a lot of frames with it without having to deal with reels of lead tape. The by-product is a dampened feel that some ppl have grown used to.
