Say a friend (who just happens to own an excellent radar gun) volunteered to watch you play a match and keep track of one statistic. What *one*statistic would you want your friend to tally?

Options include:

First serve percentage
Winning First Serve Percentage
Winning Second Serve Percentage
Aces
DFs
Winners
UEs
Net approaches percentage won
Fastest serve speed
Average first serve speed
Average second serve speed

You may make different selections for singles and doubles.

OK. I think for singles I would most want to know "Net approaches percentage won."

For singles, I feel like I am perhaps not approaching enough and also not coming in on the right balls (or with the proper approach shot) and so get passed. I'd like objective confirmation of whether I am doing more harm than good up there.

For doubles, I would want a count of my UEs. Maybe I am not keeping the ball in play as much as I think I am.

...serve is the most important shot in tennis. I only get one choice, so I'm gonna assume that I have a decent first serve. Get a high percentage of decent first serves, and everything follows from that...

Unforced errors.

We did this once during match play in one of my clinics. And it was eye opening!!!

I usually have a good idea on most of these but two really stick out that'd I'd like to know, depending on how the match went.

1. winning 2nd serve (for the days when my first dips dramatically. so we'll use that for dubs.

2. UEs in singles (especially for the offensive minded days)

I think those stats would either confirm how I felt I played o completely change my strategy based on where those numbers end up.

Winning first serve percentage in singles by far! I'd like to know what my odds are of winning once I get my serve in!

For doubles I would for sure want to see my approaching percentage! :)

Great idea for a thread Cindy!

Break points saved.

BPs given up when up 40-0 or 40-15. I expect a very high number.

1. First serves in play.
2. Returns in play.

I think Cindy now has a sidekick who sits and notes down the stats.

Can I be greedy and ask for a comparison of winners/forced errors from opponent vs. unforced errors on my end?

That would show me if I'm getting the right balance of aggression and safety.

1) Unforced Errors - Singles

My suspicion is that I leak a lot of points this way but I don't feel like many are "unforced" so it would be good to get another person's view on this.

2) Returns in play - Doubles

I think this is so crucial in doubles, once you neutralise the serve advantage the points really open up

I think I'd rather stay in my little fantasy world.

UE's in singles, First Serve percentage in doubles. Both show if you are really staying in points/matches.
