I've noticed that during a match, I tend to get nervous and swing slower than normal and my arm feels like rubber. This causes lots of out and net balls. What's a good way of finding the optimum swing speed and be able to fall back to it right away when I start to hit inconsistently during a match? I feel that without something solid to fall back on, it's very hard to try new things and improve. Thanks.

You have to practice and find your rally speed. It is a speed at which you swing your racquet in such a way as to move the ball around, keep it deep, put the desired spin on the ball, while being able to recover to the proper position BEFORE your opponent hits the ball so you can respond as soon as possible to the next shot.

You will have to deliberately head to practice and find this out over a series of a few weeks. Once you think you got it, commit it to muscle memory.

As far as nerves for tournaments, play more tournaments.

blueb, just try to relax and focus on the basics of your shot when you are pressured. Try not to let the situation get in your head and effect your strokes.
