Does anyone here think that she is over rated at all.

I just don't see here being that good, especially after Venus handed her her ***** to her at Wimb

Also what is going on with Sarena, I keep seeing her playing as if she just has no energy, saw that same thing happen when she lost to Mria last year and then when she lost a Wimb this year

Yeah, she's completely over-rated, IMO...

I mean, she is a good player i guess, but way too arrogant, too cocky and there is too much hype over her. No player on either tour can live up to that.

But why do you say that? It seemed odd to me that she did not face any of the more matured/ better players at Wimb until the end. So I am saying that some of these matches seem set up or hand picked.

What top players have she played against and beaten?

I'd say she's over-rated because of the hype. I mean,s he won Wimbledon, which is just peachy. But then what? She's not a bad player by any means, but...

her tennis is a bit over-rated, she is not about to dominate womens tennis like the great champions of the past--graff, seles, navratilova, serena, hingus, evert to name a few, but she is young and will win more majors

sidebar---her looks are way way overated. she is tall & blond with a nice figure--but she is light years from Anna

lol did you see the draw at the end of year championships? It was pathetic. everyone was injured way before the end of the year, the draw was a joke.
Like i said she might be a grass court specialist, maybe decent hard court game, but after the double bagle to davenport, im thinking twice.

No chance in hell will she ever get the french.

Thing is though, she probably hasnt stopped growing yet, or even if she has, it would have been only very recantly, and people dont realise hoiw hard it is to play tennis it the level she does when the body constanly changing.

Ask me again in three years.

Why is that? Both won 1 slam before the age of 19 and haven't gone into the second week of any other slams.

Sharapova and Nadal have both reached the second week of a slam other then their wins. Nadal reached the fourth round of this year's AO, losing in five sets to eventual finalist Hewitt. Sharapova has reached the second week I think in every slam since she's won Wimbledon LOL.

Overrated - of course she lost early in wimbledon after winning it the year before - she choked...You guys have to be kidding, with all the pressure and publicity she has gotten in the last year, her tennis keeps getting better...She is not just another pretty face - has talent and goals...

i think since she's only 18 its too early to tell. she has the talent to dominant. she has great groundstrokes and serve. that'll take u a long ways in womens tennis. however the womens game is deeper than its ever been. not sure anybody could dominant in this era. she should at least be a top 5 player for years to come. question is will she stay hungry and focused to be #1. she has distractions that henin, lindsay, and the williams don't have to worry about. but she is number 2 in the world, and although she hasn't won a major this year she has become a more consistant player, usually at least making the semifinals. and the players that beat her generally win the tournament.

I think, like is true with most players, adopting a more well-rounded game will help her cause. As for the focus and hunger to dominate, that attitude seems evident in Sharapova, and IMO, I don't think it will ever change.

how can you say that if she doesnt have one?

if sharapova has an ***, justine has double d's

she just gets more publicity cuz shes got game and OK looks, so she becomes to some a "sex idol", i think a lot of ppl just say shes hot cuz other so, i really dont see it, especially that pic on TW, shes got a nose like michael jackson in that 1
however she is NOT ugly, but shes not hot either

anyone who can win wimbledon at age 17 should deserve the hype. shes an upcoming star and has a long way to go. why not give her the credit? just because she won a grandslam does not mean she is invincible like federer. just wait a couple years

This is her singles results. She's won 212 matches, 50 loses, since year 2001. You know most of the people who think she's overrated are jealous and don't even know her real record. Just this year 2005, she's won 41 matches and lost only 7. Whoever here thinks she's not attractive, that's your opinion, you have the right to your opinion. But she's indisputably the most attractive in pro tennis.

http://www.mariaworld.net/grandslamperfomances.htm
That's her grand slam performances.
http://www.mariaworld.net/winloss.htm
That's her record of all her tournaments.

In year 2002 she was ranked 186.
In year 2003 she was ranked 32.
In year 2004 she was ranked 4.
And now she's within reach of rank 1.

And YES she's ONLY 17. Seriously before letting envy consume you, find how how HARD she's been working.

Venus got her ***** handed to her by a fifteen year old at the French Open. Does this mean Venus is overrated too?

As long as she remains a contender (at least making the qf's often) she is not overrated by any sense of the word.

I dont find the williams sisters by an means hot. Sharapova on the other hand....
About her tennis? She has the capability to dominate. She works hard and is very focused on the court. Like said before, she's still young, give it time.

I saw Sharapova on magazine on the semi adult section. She was wearing a fur coat. She only 18. Her dad should be kicked out of the country. Making her do semi adult magazines. I think Sharapova dad only care about the money. Selling her is not the way. I hope Sharapova loses her dad. Anna Kournalova also sued her parent for stealing her money. Tennis parent dont deserve any money to be good parents.

Overrated by whom? Us? Sure, all kinds of us are wildly over- and underestimating her. Even the media.
But, let's look at somebody important, the people paying her the money. The WTA and the business world. There are certain performance clauses in most all big money, long term contracts with athletes. Venus Williams did not ever collect all of the 40 million dollars in her famous contract because of this.
I would say Sharapova, as a shill, is VERY accurately rated by insurance, advertising, marketing, and entertainment business experts. I'm sure there were name recognition polls and marketing polls done before she was ever offered any big money. These people are quite flexible in their thinking and are willing to change their assessments as conditions change.
The WTA can't be wrong except by clerical error in the rankings, so her rating there as a tennis player is perfect.
The point being, the people who pay her money are much more ready, willing, and able to see her for what she really is. You, me, the other fans, the media...we not so good at it. The media are more knowledgeable, but they get as emotional and giddy as the fans.

Overrated by whom? Us? Sure, all kinds of us are wildly over- and underestimating her. Even the media.
But, let's look at somebody important, the people paying her the money. The WTA and the business world."Tilt!" The business types merely measure Market Forces. They don't care a whit if she "lives up to" her hype. They just care about the hype ... and how they can capitalize on it.

The point being, the people who pay her money are much more ready, willing, and able to see her for what she really is.Not quite. They "see her for what she really is" within the Hype Paradigm. I see her for what she is as a tennis player ... who lacks variety (at the moment). The other WTA players may figure out how NOT to feed her strengths. *If* they do ... then I'll see if she possesses the ability to adapt ... add variety to her game ... compete at a level worthy of that which would earn her the label, "Great".

(My knock against Serena is (still) that she doesn't have the [ability? heart? desire?] to adapt to the WTA's adaptations to her game. My "jury is still out" on Serena, too.)

You, me, the other fans, the media...we not so good at it. The media are more knowledgeable, but they get as emotional and giddy as the fans.I flatly disagree with both of these points.

I subscribe to Don McAlvany's view that "the majority is always wrong." (He's an Economist, not a tennis guy.) The Fans, the Media, the Bankrollers are all on the Sharapova "bandwagon" at the moment. It makes my cynical side get up its backbone. (Remember how much hype surrounded Federer five years ago? None then.... The reason I have such respect for (partial list) Tilden, Laver, Connors, Borg, Mac, Agassi ... is they remained great while adapting to the competition's response to them.)

My position on the OP is ... "Now? Yes. Later? We'll see."

The Fans, the Media, the Bankrollers are all on the Sharapova "bandwagon" at the moment.

I think you missed my points. That big fluffy pillow (performance clauses) next to the bandwagon belongs to the bankrollers, so as to give them a soft, cushy landing when they jump off. "What she really is..." is relative. To the promoters, she is a money machine.
To you and me, she is a tennis player.
The bankrollers will surely be more accurate than us in estimating her worth regardless of tennis performance (see Anna Kournikova). They also have access to better tennis observors than you, me, and fans in general to accurately predict her future performance. They will not be blinded as much as the fans and media by sentiment. They are heavily involved in producing the hype you mentioned. That doesn't mean THEY believe it, they just want US to believe it.

Yes. She's like the girl version of Roddick, although she is perhaps better at volleying. Anyway, she's got a lot of power, but I predict she'll be like Roddick...a strong contender with possibly a few grandslam titles.
