So who plays the more beautiful tennis - Federer or Edberg?

Fed. Have you seen Edberg's forehand?

Cool thread. Both so smooth on the court, defensively and offensively. I bet they'd be pretty smooth on a basketball court or a soccer pitch, too.

I'm sure some folks might say Edberg, because he came in so much and with such fluidity.
But he had that funny little forehand.

So, I think Federer. He's got all the shots.

Movement-wise, Edberg. Stroke-wise, Federer. Overall, I give the nod to Fed merely because of Edberg's forehand and serve (his backhand ALMOST makes up for it).

Edberg simply because of that awesome service motion and well... I don't like Swiss people.

great topic. edberg struck me as someone with a power player's physique who played a graceful style. federer has the athletic gift to play with enormous grace, but he's stuck in a power tennis era. (i sometimes wish that now that fed really has nothing to prove that he try playing a lot more serve and volley, just for grins.)

I actually think Federer copied Edberg's style of moving (feet barely lifting off the ground for that 'gliding' effect). He says himself that Edberg was his idol.

Fed by a million miles, Edberg may be very graceful in many areas of his game like his net play but every shot of Fed's is simply beautiful, certainly the most beautiful strokes ever, by a long shot.

Great question, tough call!!

Despite Edberg forehand, I going with him. Edberg is a big guy, at least 6'2" and not a rail. It was amazing how quickly he got to the net. I had the pleasure of seeing him play live L.A. at the UCLA tennis center about twenty years. He appeared to just glide on the court. And was very quick.

But Federer is the only player to come close or even surpass Edberg in grace.

LOL, man, nice add there. Unfortunately, we highjacked this thread with adolescent wordplay, hahaha. Sorry, Edberg/Federer fans. Back to work.

No need to compare they were/are both extremely graceful. Edberg was my favorite net player Ive ever seen.

ok ! but i think it's already been said: if you look at the whole game, roger has got the complete 'graceful' package. it's like one of those music albums where all the songs are cool, but it sounds even better if you listen to the whole thing entirely. smooth from the pre-serve ball bouncing until the backhand smash and the tweener (even his -rare- racket smashing was graceful !).

and stefan... it was such a pleasure to watch him playing at the net ! a kinda swedish ninja volleying so quickly and smoothly. :)
(now... if someone had a video of him smashing a racket, that would be something !)

^Ah oui. Merci bien.
Edberg smashing a racquet, haha! Borg, Roger, et al...all of those guys in their youth would be funny to see act out, as we've read about.

You know, with cell phone video technology being so pervasive, I think the day will come that almost every embarrassing, crappy moment in a kid's life will be cyber-immortalized.

So, one day, our grandkids will see their favorite players and celebrities vomiting, playing the Wii in their PJs, getting something caught in their braces, scoring an own goal in 6u soccer, getting humped by a dog, etc.

The Edberg forehand always holds him back but as an SV exponent he was one of the best.

Yes, when lobbed his athleticism lightened up.While Federer moves brilliantly sidewards, Stefanīs game was based on forward movement.
