In the Davis Cup tie pitting Brazil against Netherland Antilles, Ricardo Mello scored a triple bagel yesterday.

BRAZIL leads NETHERLANDS ANTILLES 2-0
Venue: Santa Caterina, Brazil (clay indoors)

Ricardo Mello (BRA) d. David Josepa (AHO) 60 60 60
Gustavo Kuerten (BRA) d. Alexander Blom (AHO) 61 63 62

I don't see that as big as achievement of scoring a triple bagel in regular tournament play. Mello is ranked 51 in the world and Josepa is barely on the map with a YTD record of 0-1, and a virtually non-active profile on the ATP site. Is that the first time that has happened in Davis Cup to make it momentous?

It might be the first time, but I still think it's an impressive feat regardless. It's still very rare and very difficult to do.

I know the Davis Cup atmosphere, and it just doesn't stand up to scoring a triple bagel in regular tourny play. I mean the venue is Mello's home and surface. But impressive nonetheless...

Nice to see Guga playing 5 set matches again. I am sure this win will give him confidence to play at a high level again. He believes he can play his best tennis during the US OPEN and the beginning of next yr is his main goal.

It can't be the first time - I remember when talking about Alan Mills (tournament ref for wimby) someone mentioned that one of his accomplishments was a 6-0 6-0 6-0 win in Davis Cup.

I agree that it's not as much an accomplishment now for Mello in Davis Cup as it would be in tournament play, simply because the country format of Davis Cup allows there to be pretty serious mismatches in players.

Not that anyone probably cares, but Teo Susnjak got triple bageled by Gouichi Motomura back a few years ago when New Zealand played Japan.

at the pro level i think scoring a triple bagel is pretty impressive. these guys are pros for a reason so its not like they can't play... roger federer couldn't even triple bagel ME hahaha

Sorta like putting a 3.0 player up against a 4.0 player. You would expect a bagel.

not the first time brazilians are a factor in a historic match.... in the late 80's (1984 I believe) a brazilian got the only golden set recorded in professional tennis in some small tourney in the US..... nonetheless Rusedski almost did it against Massu once a couple of yrs. ago. and Massu isn't exactly a challenger player.
