Doctorbackhand and myself were bored, so we decided to take out our old triad hammer 4.0 MP to customize. First, we added 5 overgrips to bring the gripsize up to 5 from 4 (3/8) and to make the racket more headlight. Then we added 18 g of lead from 1-4 and 11-8. The end specs are 11.7oz, 331.5 swingweight, and a 4pt headlight balance. We're going to string it up with a basic synthetic to start then change strings once we get a better feel of the frame. Any thoughts towards the experiment would be appreciated.

You could have put some lead under the grip or inside the buttcap rather than increase the grip size.

There was an experiment done by racquetresearch.com wherein the author put a load of tail weight on a Wilson Hammer to create the most arm-friendly racquet there is according to his calculations.

^^^We prefer larger grip sizes so we used some old spare overgrips.:)

Finally got the racket to the stringer so it should be back in a week. While we're waiting though, I have a question for TTers...

Does anybody else on this forum customize HH rackets specifically? I don't mean low swing/static weight rackets like Trav does, but rackets that are 4 pts HH?

The problem with building up a grip with five overgrips is that it rounds out the bevels, so you can't tell by feel if your grip position is where you want it. It's better to build up the grip with sheets of balsa wood, to keep sharp edges.

I have a Hammer 6.2 "skunk" that I brought up to an even balance by loading up the handle with silicone caulk. It's my #3 racquet, and still has a place in my bag.

Doctor here...
^^^Never really cared about having sharp bevels as I only use eastern and conti and they are just hair away form each other. Besides that, I love the pillowy feel 5 overgrips give.

Also the original grip was about 4 and I play w/ 4 5/8 and I don't know anything about pallets. I really didn't want to risk destroying the racket.

I got the racket back a little while ago but I was waiting for the tension on the string to drop. I got Biaphase when I asked for Gamma synthetic and having such a buttery string in a racket like that felt terrible. The tension is about 58 by now and I added a rubberband to get rid of that annoying feel it had. I also added 10 grams to 3 &9 .

This is definitely different. If you like clunky beastly rackets this is a good set up for you. It feels like your swinging a hammer (get it?). It just plows through everything. You feel nothing but the ball leaving the strings. Even mishits are barely noticed. I can't imagine going to the net with this or serving though. Its so clunky that it takes years to get the thing moving. If you just stay on the baseline all day then something like this is worth trying out. S&V or touch players or spin meisters especially really won't like it. It takes so much effort to move this racket and it doesn't give that much spin. It gives a little, not a lot.

Also, I just acquired a Wilson 5.0 Hammer (the blue one with PWS) and I want to try to customize it to be less clunky and more stable. The racket is strung with prince synthetic which is good for me because I won't have to restring. Any suggestions on mods is appreciated.

*never mind — levered the cap off (much simpler construction than I thought it would be). Seems the BLX Blade 98's handle is filled with foam. I managed to get a few grams of Blu-Tac in there anyhow. See if it feels any different.

You could have put some lead under the grip or inside the buttcap rather than increase the grip size.

Quick hijack thread question: how do you open the door on a butt cap? I have a Wilson Blade 98 and the cap has a little rectangular hole, which I assume is the release for the door. Concerned about breaking it, do I just insert a small screwdriver and push down, or lever out, or twist?

Thanks!

I never noticed how much more oval the 4 was compared to the 5.
