I knew this Racket felt head heavy compared to the other 2. Since they were way off on the total weight with this one they added their lead at 12 O'Clock. It still left the Racket 5Gr lighter then the other 2, but made it near 3 points more on the head heavy side. Maybe that's why they quit making the grommets for them, they don't want you to see what's hidden. I know others have had this same issue with their Rackets. :neutral:

I used the wrong code on those pics and should have took the time to delete them. They were just another pic of the same with flash and another of the whole piece of lead removed.

They don't make grommets any more? Does that predict the rackets' future or what.

Yep, we already discussed that phenomenon many months ago. I followed the topic carefully but I don't remember what the official response was. Anyone know/remember?

I don't think the official respone, if any, was ever reported by that OP.

I was told once a Racket is discontinued, they don't make any more Bumper/Grommets Sets. They just sell the remaining stock and then that's the end. My complaint to them fell on deaf ears.

Given what they charge for racquets and how quickly they often discontinue them, that is pretty well ridiculous. I have considered trying out a Donnay, but that policy alone is enough to turn me off to them completely. Too many other good racquets on the market to deal with a company that cares so little about its customer base.

martyr444

I told them no matter how good any Companies products are, bad policy decisions can and usually does kill customer loyalty. Without customer loyalty and growth no company can expect a long life in the business world.

I have grommet kits to replace individual grommets that can extend my Racket's life even though they are black verses the OEM white ones. As a poly user I have to change string quite frequently which shortens the life of the grommet at the tie offs. When they sell their Rackets they should throw in a couple of sets free for each Racket because of this policy the have IMHO.

Out of curiousity, did the specs listed on the serial number sticker (first 3 digits are unstrung weight, second 3 digits are balance point) accurately reflect the weight of the frame, either with or without the lead?

martyr444
03-04-2012, 10:49 AM
Good question,

All 3 Rackets listed the exact same weight which placed the leaded Racket way off the listed spec. The balance point on them was close to what was listed.

Once you pulled the lead off, was the leaded racket close to the sticker listed spec?

I must put in a good word for poster Suppawat as he had a connection with a friend who was able to get me 3 sets of the much needed Bumper/Grommet sets. He offered me his help without me even requesting it.

After removing the lead and changing the butt cap to a 5GR, it brought this Racket much closer to the other 2 Racket's specs. I do like the butt cap choices but that doesn't smooth over their bad policies as stated before.

How many grams was that at 12 o'clock? It looks like 3-4 grams. That could increase the SW by about 15 points. Very poor QC on their frames if they need to compensate with this much lead at the tip.

martyr444
03-04-2012, 12:18 PM
You are correct Bud and it did make a big difference in the swing weight.

Absolutely appalling practice by Donnay not least because adding weight to the tip is not the same as having a more distribution of mass throughout the hoop. Shocking QC when you take into account the price.

What's interesting to me is that they clearly didn't add the lead simply to get the racket to "spec" since the OP noted that with the added lead it was not at spec but rather it was signficantly heavier.

I've seen other similar posts like this one and it has me wondering if somehow Donnay has a bunch of customized demos or something (new and/or used) that somehow were sold as standard spec rackets. Not sure if it's purely QC but they definitely need to be better at controlling what is distributed.

Just to clarify this, this Racket was at stock quite a bit under weight to the listed specs on the frame. They added the weight but still left it light and then by adding it to the tip, messed up the swing weight. They would have gotten it closer by adding weight inside the handle, but still wouldn't make this the right thing to do. If the manufacturer cannot get the original product close to spec, just list it that way on the frame but let the consumer know how far off it is. Then the consumer can decide whether to purchase this Racket or not. All this becomes meaningless in the end if you cannot purchase Bumper\Grommet Sets once they run out of the original batch. Not all of us purchase new Rackets each year; some of us get the Rackets we play well with and then keep them for 2-3 years to fine tune our game.

Well, if you bought it brand-new, then the great Roman Prokes must have placed the lead there.

Since Roman Prokes is the god of all tennis technology, you'd better not take that off!

So you aked Donnay to modify your racquet? And now, you are surprised to find lead tape used?

he didn't ask donnay to modify his racquet. donnay modified the racquet that he bought on their own because it came out of the factory off spec. only after he purchased it did he realize this. and even after donnay attempted to remedy the bad qc with lead tape, the racquet was still quite a bit off spec.

kind of appalling. remind me to stay away from donnays

It's what I've been saying all along.... The company sux the racquets are great.

I really enjoyed the x white 99....one of the best sticks they made. Amazing reflex volleys.

Why the hell did they discontinue it after being out for barely a year?

Terrible policies......great stick though.

They are correct, I never asked them to mod the Racket. I knew it was way off spec so I finally removed the Bumper to see why it was so head heavy. It was HH even without the added tape.

Donnay X-White 99

I wasn't sure if it was that or the "wickmayer special".The latter was being sold here in England for £20 brand new, I wandered if that was an indication of quality...

See the little curvy things at the end of my sentences those are question marks. Iím asking questions.

Anyway, if they came from the factory floor with lead under the grommets that is f'ed up.

I love my Pro One, but when I cut the strings out I may look under the grommets.

Donnay comes back into the market and has some struggles with QC, so the hate begins? Sad.

Which racquet company hasn't been blasted for QC issues on this forum? No one is exempt.

Yeah I used to play with that stick. I have four.....I loved it.

I could build it up to the measurements of almost any other Donnay just for fun.

What a great stick!!!

But then they come out with the X dual series and them to make matters worse they discontinue the white!!! That really ****ed me off.

I swore I wouldn't try the pro one .....I gave in and I tried and loved it.

So now I have spent a truckload . I asked donnay to give me a break since I spent soooooo much money with them In such a short time and they wouldn't.

The company management really is poor. They really do make bad decisions .

It's like being with a really hot chick who is insane and drives you nuts. Can't live with a Donnay and can't live without a Donnay....lol.

Quality issues with most companies .

Wilson is the worst

Has anyone else noticed the TW power map/power zone charts and specs for the Wilson Pro Open 2012? The racquet they evaluated shows a weight spec of 294g. That is 10.4 oz! .6 oz less then what it should be. Amazing!! I know that is Wilson for you, but I wish TW would hand pick a racquet that was closer to the average, or what the specs should be. But who knows, maybe they tried and this was a close as they could find.

Here is what they list as their specs on the pro open 2012:
Length = 27.00
Headsize = 100
Weight = 294 or 10.4 oz (should be 311g or 11 oz)
Balance = 34.50
Swingweight = 317
Twistweight = 14.82

I've actually been considering the Pro Open, but like with all Wilson's you never seem to know what you're going to get. Anyone else been lucky or unlucky with the 2012 pro open? Is your racquet close to what it shoud be?

Kal El,

What's the deal with Donnay discontinuing sticks after a short time.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I wish they would give us some warning in the future .

I actually see that they have started to do that by notifying us that there are new sticks coming out in the spring .

But what they did with discontinuing the majority of their line and then coming out with a whole new line I feel was just wrong.

They should give a discount to those who have bought their old sticks.

I remember Apple had the same issue. They would come out with an iPhone and then very shortly thereafter they came out with a newer iPhone without any warning .

The difference is that Apple gave a $100 dollar rebate to customers who bought the old one.

Don't you think Donnay owes its customers the same thing .

So far I have 4 whites, 1 platinum , 4 pro ones , 1 silver. Thats over 2k already .
