Federer carried the Swiss flag in both 2004 and 2008. It wouldn't surprise me to see him do it again this year, as the Swiss seem to have more better concentrations in winter sports than summer sports.

Tennis' history at the Olympics is very short. It's no surprise that tennis players who also bore their nation's flag is somewhat unheard of.

Steffi Graf won a Gold Medal in 1984 when tennis was a demonstration sport at the LA Olympics. And Graf won a Gold Medal in 1988 Seoul Olympics. Tennis in the Olympics has been well recognized for a while now.

Might be a bit tricky to buttpick while carrying the flag, no?

BTW, Rosset won singles gold in Barcelona '92 and was rewarded with an offer to carry the Swiss flag at Atlanta '96. He declined due to the outfit he would have worn...lederhosen and mountain boots on a 6'7" (2 meters) frame didn't appeal to him.

:) I just saw the quote in your sig, Bully. I'm very flattered you're going through my old posts, but I wonder about the point of that quote. Am I supposed to be embarrassed for being gay? ... Or for not lusting over Spanish muscles? But I stand by what I said: Young Andy is very cute, and Novak is still sexy. He can don his favorite tiny swimsuit and wave the rainbow flag anytime.

Nadal will more than likely have the number one ranking well before the Olympics, the way Djokovic is going. Nadal made a big points gain at the AO, Djokovic gained nothing at the AO and lost points at Dubai. Djokovic now must win Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Wimbledon. Good luck....

That is exactly why Nadal will be number one very soon. Nadal only has to defend finals mostly. Only 3 titles. And he's already made a huge profit by bettering his 2011 AO QF. Djokovic has to win almost every masters shield and 3 slams, just to keep his points. He can't even profit. No chance.

Three of those finals are on hard courts. And two of them are coming after a month's break. Nadal's history at both Indian Wells and Miami aren't that great. It's no lock for him to be in the final of all three.

Nadal has a superb record at Indian Wells, he's won it twice. One of the 5 best Indian Wells players ever. Miami, made the final last year, and came closer to beating Djokovic (won the first set, lost 3rd set tie-breaker) than he did in any of the finals over the past year. Plus he's already made a huge points gain at the Australian Open. So he's ahead of the ball already, so it doesn't need to be lock.

You do know that the only thing Djokovic needs to keep No.1 is do better than Nadal. Besides, Nadal is not a lock for finalist in every tournament with the exception of Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Roland Garros. That's just three events.

Outside of the slams since the French Open, Nadal has lost to the following:
Tsonga, Dodig, Fish, Murray, Mayer, Federer, Tsonga and Monfils so Nadal isn't exactly a lock for every finals.

Like it or not, Bullz has a point. Making finals will be the norm for Nadal because he usually gets straightforward draws with no real landmines or guys that can cause him trouble. (There are very few of them anyway, and he mostly somehow manages to avoid them). It also seems like Fed-Nadal in the same half is something that will be a theme for 2012 which again ensures a final spot for Nadal until the USO. Only if Nadal draws Murray, he is not a lock for the final.
And it is more than clear that there is no way Djoker is defending all his 2011 points. The only factor that can tilt the balance here is Murray if he keeps his head together as he is defending pretty much nothing for a while. Federer , not so much, except for the odd good run here and there.

Isn't that exactly what I am asking? Why would you create a thread, with the title "Which tennis players have carried the flag for their country at the Olympic Opening?" and then go on bragging about how great Nadal is, because he is going to carry Spain's flag at this year's Olympics? Do you not read the titles of your own threads?

What are you talking about? Djokovic has already failed to defend his points. He won Dubai last year, and lost in the semi-finals this year. It only took 2 events for him to fall behind. While Nadal has already gained, heavily by making the AO final after only making the QF last year.

Oh, I am not creating threads left and right just to derail them myself and turn them in to another "Nadal is the most amazing human being that ever lived" ode. Talking about frustration and insecurity.

FYI, your thread WAS somewhat interesting, since tennis was not popular sport at the Olympics not so long ago, and choosing a tennis player to carry the respective national flag is indeed a nod towards the game and the individual players. Your nonsensical approach ruins even good threads.

Spain is such a Rafa haterz, they make him carry the flag after he has been demolished by Nole 7 consecutive times and counting.Don't they know the warrior Rafa gets tired easily and that the tennis season is too long. The least Spain could do is carry Rafa during the ceremonies. Plus he has brought a lot of dignity and horror to the country they wait until now to make him flagger? Huh, no puedo senor, no puedo.

The Nadal will not take kindly to this. He will make siesta no? and jump up and down in the dugout and will make the whole Spanish delegation wait for at least 55 seconds longer because there is no shot clock in Olympics opening.

Considering he has single-handedly brought shame and dishonor to his nation by losing to Nole seven times in a row on all surfaces, I doubt they would ask him. He has pained and disillusioned fans like myself by being mentally weak. Hopefully, he won't be allowed to be in the contingent.
