There seems to be lots of top-ranked ATP and WTA singles players playing doubles at Indian Wells, more so than ordinarily found teaming up at a regular Slam/major. Is the money any better at the IW dubs tourneys? Are the scheduling arrangements any better?

Because they don't mind sticking around for doubles even if they do lose in the early rounds in their singles draw. because they have to be in Miami next week, they don't mind sticking around.
but in Miami, it is different. If they lose early in singles, they want out and fly out to europe right away. and they don't want to stay in miami just for doubles.

Well, slams are more intensive and exhaustive. These Masters 1000 doubles tournaments helps them improve their net game and also helps their partner earn a nice paycheck.

Getting ready for olympics (besides the money)

Speculating - maybe the tournament being a little longer in duration where they don't play everyday allows them to work it into their schedule more easily, than those tournaments where the duration is 1 week.

Yeah, it's the spacing, I think. The tournament is almost two weeks long, but matches are best-of-3. So they tire themselves out less than at a typical tournament, and so they can afford to play doubles on the off-days (because they have off-days!)
