The French know how to eat and drink. No denying that.

Even a "bad" meal in France is pretty damn good.

A bad meal in America is just.......bad.

We know a chef / owner of a local restaurant. He used to live in New York and ran several high end places. He recently came back from an extended trip to Paris. He said he was amazed how great the "baseline" is in French restaruants.

I stole that above line that "even a bad meal in France is good" from him, but that has been my experience as well.

Ya, I really hope to get on a plane and fly someday. That would be awesome. I've read about these distant lands in books (ok, ok, I just watched the movie). The people there must be like gods.

"Paris" is not "France" just as "New Orleans" is not "America."

True. But if I ever visited America, I'd probably rather go to New Orleans than Worms, Nebraska.

IMO, the goal of art is to provoke a reaction. Good or bad. And thought. What was the intention of the artist? Why did he do it like that? What was he trying to convey?

By this criterion, RG posters never fail to deliver. Every year I've been on this board, there's been at least one thread about the RG poster.

What I like about RG posters is that they're very personal from the artist's point of view. No conformism. The artists are free to do as they like. Freedom, isn't that great?

From a personal POV now, I don't like this year's poster. Too overloaded. Too flat.

I hate it when people start saying its a real work of art and it takes real thought of thinking slightly differently and creating something a little out of the ordinary when really thats just all b*ullsh*t and it doesn't take any talent at all and represents nothing out of the ordinary or a bit quirky its just plain terrible, i used to love art and do it at school at lot and took it at A level but all the teachers were ever looking for was crappy abstract stuff like that which takes no skill what so ever and can bang out every 5 minutes, i used to go round galleries in London and look at all these incredible paintings and portraits thinking wow that must have taken some real talent and handwork to produce something like that and then i would come to something like that Roland garros abstract stuff and think how on earth did this piece of sh*t which took probably about 5 mins to do with some 10 meter wide paintbrush splodged all over it get put up in the same gallery as this, its disgraceful

I'm not taking anything away from the UK, praising the French culture.

You have no idea what I'm talking about do you.

Uh, I'd watch out if I were you. The man's been to Europe.

but the best food I've ever had was in Paris. you've probably never been in Europe

That's why I ****ged off Canada, not France. France is a changed nation from the times of Monet, Manet, Matisse and Rimbaud. It's as if I admired the UK and still expected to meet the likes Isaac Newton, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Henry the VIIIth or Winston Churchill.

You were doing great until you brought Churchill into it...:-|

djones, you don't get it ... what talented artists do you know? please let me know? have you ever been in any gallery? sure, you don't like it ... you prefer some realistic pics of ducks and wolves ... is that what art means to you? please don't talk about stuff you know nothing about .... so stupid

Art is an expression! How can you call someone stupid just because his/her perception of some form of expression differs from yours. You sound like a complete moron.

The other RG posters have some artistic merit to them, but this one is just crap. I have no idea what they were thinking here.

Sentinel got it right. There are many circular shapes for Olympic rings, and red is for the clay.

Only an artistic mind can read into such nuances.

Okay so that's definitely a racquet in the middle, that looks like a spade to the unarty. That circle at the bottom is a ball that has been hit with extreme topspin, the trail is visible.

The X next to the racquet is obviously Nadal who has dropped to the ground and is raising his arms in victory after winning his 2000th FO.

Alternatively, it could also be someone trying to fry an egg on a non-stick pan.

It might have something to do with 2000. Everyone probably expected something ground breaking and completely unique for the new millenium.

And what did they get for this breathtaking milestone in human society?

2 minutes of a 3 year old holding a paintbrush.

The significance of the year and the ****iness of the painting couldn't be any more out of place when put together.
Each is a contradiction of the other.

The guy who made the 2000 poster was a pretty famous Spanish painter.

He died this year in February .

That's the french for you. They consider bad pretentious designs to be considered "art." French people are super pretentious.

Federer could have saved himself the trouble of becoming a tennis player and winning all these tourneys, if he just learned how to paint.

He knows that and is working on it.
Actually, Fed Jr on the right here is giving the finishing touches on the theme for RG 2013

if the aim of the painter is to make the spectator think, then... it's kinda successful. i "see" something but, fellow TTW members, i think i need your help for the interpretation...

i see a hairy snail complaining to the umpire (sitting at the top of his red chair), who is a sort of egg cut in two (the yolk being a swallowed tennis ball ?) wearing a blue cap and smoking two big joints (one on the front side, the other one on the back side... sounds a bit surrealist to me, but who knows ? maybe half eggs have this peculiar ability ?).

i have the impression to hear the hairy snail insisting on the fact that his slime was on the line, requesting the haweye (we can clearly see a green hawk in the background, flying in the sky and trying to reach them)... but this request is denied by the half egg umpire (and that's probably why the hairy snail looks so angry).

i seriously doubt any other interpretation is possible, but you can still expose yours. :)

man, French are so sophisticated, old culture ... you Americans are something ... get some extra large fries with a big fat burger ... I don't know about your 'chef', but the best food I've ever had was in Paris. you've probably never been in Europe ... yet, you are listening to your 'chef', so silly ... man if you can afford it, go to Paris and Rome ... food is absolutely amazing, nothing like North America or America per se

LOL, this post will be particularly hilarious to think about next time any of us finds ourselves in Paris and notices (it's pretty obvious) that all of the so called high end French restaurants sit empty - while McDonalds, Burger King and all those other "despised" American burger joints are completely packed with locals!
