Just for fun....lets list them, with David Goffin to start.

Who were the rest (male or female), when/what year, how far did they go in the main draw of any grand slam event?

1985 French Open
Emilio Sanchez, 3rd Round

1991 Australian Open
Glenn Layendecker, 3rd round

I read this, but wikipedia doesn't have any LL's listed in the '78 draw?

To be fair, Goffin is 21 years old and ranked 109th in the world. Yet despite his loss in the final round of qualifying, when he sneaked into the main draw here as the so-called Lucky Loser, he rattled off three wins and became the first such “loser” to make the Round of 16 at Roland Garros since 1978.

The furthest that a lucky loser has progressed at the US Open was Verdasco reaching the 3rd round in 2003.

He lost to Jeff Salzenstein in the final qualifying round. In the main draw he beat Robredo and Sanguinetti before losing Srichaphan.

For the women, the Argentine Maria Jose Gaidano reached the 4th round of the US Open in 1993. Her run was ended by Zvereva.

At Roland Garros in 2006, the Belgian Kirsten Flipkens lost to Virginie Pichet in their final round qualifying match. However amusingly they were drawn to face each other in the 1st round of the main draw. Flipkens took advantage of her lucky loser entry to gain instant revenge. That must have been annoying for Pichet.

The Aussie John McCurdy reached the 4th round at Wimbledon in 1983. He lost his final round qualifying match 11-9 in the 5th set,
but won 3 matches in the main draw, beating Adriano Panatta's younger brother Claudio in the 2nd round. His was was ended by Mayotte.

Quite a few players have reached the 3rd round or better as a lucky loser at Wimbledon:
1983 - John McCurdy - 4th round
1991 - Andrei Olhovskiy - 3rd round
1991 - Martin Laurendeau - 3rd round
1992 - Grant Stafford - 3rd round
1995 - Dick Norman - 4th round
2001 - Wayne Black - 3rd round
2002 - George Bastl - 3rd round
2002 - Jeff Morrison - 3rd round
2003 - Victor Hanescu - 3rd round
2005 - Justin Gimelstob - 3rd round

And a couple of more recent ones. Flavio Cipolla lost to Rui Machado in 2008 US Open qualifying, before reaching the 3rd round and leading Wawrinka by 2 sets to love before Stan fought back.

And at the 2009 Australian Open, Delic lost to Mayer in qualifying. In the main draw he beat both Dent and PHM in 5 sets before losing a hard fought 3rd round match against the defending champion Djokovic.

This one is the one, beats two former champions and a doubles legend, then loses to a former champion, awesome run.

well, i guess several former top 10 players have entered some draws as a lucky loser early in their career, but you probably meant "lucky loser who had a good run", right ?

Yes he won the Zagreb title as a lucky loser in 2008.

The players that have won titles as a lucky loser:
Heinz Gunthardt (Springfield 1978 )
Bill Scanlon (Maui 1978 )
Francisco Clavet (Hilversum 1990)
Christian Miniussi (Sao Paulo 1991)
Sergiy Stakhovsky (Zagreb 2008 )
Rajeev Ram (Newport 2009)

you're right ! (of course)

according to wikipedia, 7 players won tournaments as a "LL" since 1978 (was this LL thing implemented that year ?).

Francisco Clavet, 1990, Hilversum
Christian Miniussi, 1991, São Paulo
Sergiy Stakhovsky, 2008, Zagreb
Rajeev Ram, 2009, Newport
... and now the game is to find the 3 remaining ones ! ;)
