I was trying to remember if anything like this ever happened before, Martin Verkerk was a complete nobody before and after the he blasted his way to the final of RG.

Similar player too, tall and massive serve and groundstrokes and kamikaze tennis.

Good call. Rosol will most likely fall short, though. On clay you have more time to get into position and bang all you want, on grass there's no such luxury. From what little I saw Rosol lacks the quick, catlike movement of the great grass-courters.

Yes, Boris Becker had "cat-like" movement...

Not very fast like a lot of his other rivals, but had extremely good shot anticipation and instinct. The makings of a grand slam champ.

Well yeah, 7 finals. But if you are a power player then you don't live and die by your movement, that's why Becker was able to dominate like he did.

Closest would be probably Ivo Karlovic beating Lleyton Hewitt. Karlovic was a couple years younger than Rosol and was moving up, while Rosol seemed to have peaked. George Bastl over Sampras was perhaps even more shocking and Bastl had never done anything on tour, but Sampras was on the decline.
Of course, Wilander, McEnroe, Chris Evert and other youngsters, made unexpected runs, but they were top of the juniors and were expected to get to the top of the game, just not that fast.
Incidentally, Verkerk had already won an ATP tournament and had just reached the quarters at the Italian Open prior to his run in Paris, so it wasn't nearly as surprising as Rosol's win over Nadal.

Becker was no Sampras or Edberg, but he still moved relatively well for a big guy. Tsonga is probably the closest equivalent today.

Becker is nowhere NEAR as fast as Tsonga! Not even in the same ballpark!

Gulbis would be the nearest equivalent today.

if u watched sampras/bastl it was more a case of sampras playing real bad and bastl playing well enough to pick up the pieces. v different to nadal/rosol

verrkerk is a good comparison. he just blew players off the court. BUT he had form on clay - made QFs of Rome same year. n he got mono straiht after the fo run. if he hadnt, who knows? maybe not a one off

the reason is verkerk had big game but also played smart. rosol didnt. he played some insane tennis the other night but also hit some massive shanks. was just brute power n indiscriminent swinging. was in the zone and untouchable but that sort of thing doest last a whole tourney

i have put money on a straight sets loss next round

Maybe Callieri is a better comparison. Once a year he would play INSANE tennis. 145mph first serve, 125mph second serves. 95 mph groundstrojes. Unbeatable. He beat Agassi once, and Hewitt in the USO:

Rosol will not even come close to the final, and will be lucky to even make it past Coleslaw. He's nothing more than a stopper who thrived off of his serve against a guy who was playing like sh*t. He's not going to become some world beater at this stage of his career.

dood nadz was not playing like ****

he got destroyed by a guy playing untouchable tennis on a surface that wasnt great for him

so many ppl ruin the cred of otherwise good posts when they let their fanboyishness come thru

"Dood",Nadal was playing like sh*t,especially throughout the first 3 sets. The only time he really got going was in the 4th set,but them closing the roof stalled his momentum and gave the Stopper time to regroup. If you think Nadal played as well as he can in that match then you haven't been paying attention.

And btw,I am a woman,not a dude.

nadz always plays crappy wimby 1st week coz the back of court grass hasnt clayified yet. just he usually doesnt play anyone cept spudz till the 4r so he can win with sub par game

this is as good as nadz usually gets on fast surfaces. he just ran into a guy playin insane tennis and got a well earned whuppin

And btw,I am a woman,not a dude.
that splains it
