I am surprised that no one has mentioned that it looks like Federer will have won the most singles titles of anyone in 2012. This will tie Ivan Lendl for most years that a player has won the most singles titles in a year with 6. Both had 5 years where they outright had the most and one year where they were tied with another player for the most.

Murray won 6 titles in 2009 so it may not be as unusual as you think. I'm sure Mustard can tell us who actually holds the record.

interesting record...

but i think sampras should be mentioned: i have him with 6 seasons with the most titles... but including 2 with a tie.

1992 (5 titles, tied with becker and courier)
1993 (8 titles, alone)
1994 (10 titles, alone)
1996 (8 titles, alone)
1997 (8 titles, alone)
1999 (5 titles, tied with agassi and norman)

Yeah it is, he barely lost at all. Rafa had 10 in 2005.

Yeah I know people give credit to nadal in 2008 and 2010 but he had a fabulous year in 2005

I think he meant that Sexi Rogi and Mr Lendl had both won the most titles in a season on 6 occasions mate - not that they won 6 titles in a single year.

For seasonal dominance, I salute Chris Evert. In 1974 and 1975, she won 16 titles each year, then a mere 12 titles in 1976.

Yes, well done. Impressive that Federer's years would be 9 years apart. Lendl's were 8 years apart and Sampras' were 7 yeras apart.

Actually Nadal won 11 titles in 2005 not 10, same as Federer, 22 titles between them that season.....pretty impressive.

I'm not too keen on the # of titles won records. The size/difficulty of tournaments won is perhaps more important.

For example, Connors' record of 109 overall. Well, Fed could try to make a run at it if he plays long enough...but wouldn't he just play a bunch of 250 tournaments if he really thought the record mattered? On the other hand, if he keeps his schedules limited and focused on slams and m1000's, it will probably be unreachable.
