You can throw Murray into that debate as well - both of them have the smash of a player ranked in the 100s.

These last few months maybe - it's something that Mr Lendl had him focus on, but I've seen plenty of overhead fail from Murray. His own brother says he has the worst smash in the top 100! Novak is just as bad right enough - the OP is spot on with that.

Match point - smash right at the net, and Djokovic still hits it wide
He hasn't really improved much since then! lol

Agreed, Federer and Nadal have two of the best smashes tennis has ever seen...

Lol no. Federer's is decent compared to the best, but Nadal isn't as good as a guy like Edberg, Tsonga or Sampras.

He has THE worst smash of any number 1 player of the modern era.

He looks shakey everytime he hits one.

He's not even that surprised he missed.

Don't think that is going to happen so quickly Clarky! Don't think **** is done quite yet. Chumps like Berdych and Tsonga are not likely to beat him that is for sure. :)

Tsonga ain't a chump. Djokovic just played superb today.

If Tsonga improves his footwork and his BH, he can seriously do damage him.

On Berdych.... ok, he truly isn't cut out to trouble Djokovic.

He can't do it better, he wear contact lenses, can't see the ball at certain angles, that's the reason, not bad motion or technic.

Hah, that would explain it.

Why doesn't he have these hilarious misses off groundstrokes then? Doesn't lack of eyesight hurt you off midcourt putaways?

Becuse he's not looking straight to the lights. In outdoor conditions when the sun is up,he wears hat, I guess it's easier for him,but in indoor conditions, I think that lights have big impact on his eye focus.

Wouldn't that also affect his serving indoors?

lol, funny thread but Dang, and most of you are right. Novak is something when it comes to smashing. He is getting better, but some of his mishits made me chuckle so much that my tummy was literally hurting.

so yeah, it the smash category Djokovic is the worst #1 in tennis history :).

I would think so. And I am sure there are many players who wear contacts that don't have a smash as terrible as ****'s. Sounds like an excuse to me.

Yeah I can hardly remember a time when Fed/Rafa/Roddick/Sampras ever missed a smash.

but Murray and Djoker have had some epic fails.

The smash is a confidence shot. There isn't anything fundamentally wrong with the way he hits it. It's just that for some reason his normally quick footwork becomes sluggish and he can't seem to contact it cleanly.

not saying it never happens...but the title says a "terrible smash" ...the guys I listed win plenty of points on that stroke to make up for the very few times they don't.
