With all the obsessive discussions about what Murray has done or failed to do today, we British tennis fans seem to have overlooked Heather Watson winning her maiden WTA title at the HP Japan Women’s Open Tennis tournament in Osaka!

She had to save 4 match points to do it but she got there in the end. So congratulations and well done Heather! The first British woman tennis player to win a WTA singles title since 1988!

She and Laura Robson (who made her first WTA final last month) are clearly creating some kind of future for British women's tennis after so many years of absolutely nothing. Let's hope they can both progress onwards and upwards to bigger and better things.

Really happy for heather, wish I could have watched the match but time zone difference clearly prevented that. Hopefully 2013 is a good year for both

She choked the Second set away while serving for it. Still at least she fought through to the end and won.

Too bad Murray did the same but lost at the end.

Yes, too bad. It would have been such a neatly symmetrical course of events for both had the end results been the same. But at least one of them ended on a happier note and, for a first time finalist, that's got to be all the more special! :)

Couldn't be more deserved either, Heather works as hard as anybody on court (and is a lovely person too!)

I know this you french shower. I knew that you would come and post this, seeing as you like scrutinising my every word. The fact that she is from Guernsey is completely irrelevant to the statement "She is doing England proud". She could be doing the Ivory coast proud too if she had enough support from there.

Only in your mind. Everyone else can see what a tube you've made of yourself. Hev will be playing tennis against England at the next Commonwealth games.

Yes you are right. The English don't support her. They don't care about her because she's a non-English Brit, that's how petty we are over here.

Has he managed to create himself an independent state now?

Yes. He has created an international island where players come and train, and then go away and claim to represent their countries. The Guardian article says that Heather did not train in the UK and the LTA cannot claim her as their protege, but they were shrewd enough to throw some money her way when she showed some potential.
