View Full Version : NEW RULE: 1 game penalty if you smash your racket!

I understand that losing a big point is really frustrating, but Djokovic, Murray and the others shouldn't smash their rackets for some reasons.

1- They are super paid professionals.... they should get over their frustration;
2- They are a really important example for youngsters that may follow this terrible behavior;
3- It is a complete lack of respect for a "gentleman" sport that is having its success also because it does differentiate from some sports that are not really about fair-play (soccer).

I think they should introduce a very harsh penalty for smashing a racket (1 game?). The penalty is also very easy to implement as it would be enforced when the racket is broken!

That would work!

1 game penalty would be ridiculous and potentially ruin matches. I like seeing a racquet smash now and then.

Even if we all agree....it won't be accepted by ATP of ITF.

So pointless banter.....

I rather Nole smash all the racquets in the world than use potty language to the umpires and the audience in attendance.

Novak TRUE gentleman, Fed just a bitter old man.

There is no upside to such a rule.

I just don't get the extreme dislike of the racket smash. The current system in place seems sufficient to me. If it were really getting out of hand all they need to do is enforce the current rules more consistently.

There has been racket smashing in tennis for ages. After not following tennis closely for 10+ years, I don't see it happening any more now than it was when I last paid close attention so I don't buy that it's getting out of hand just now.

Most people I know find tennis boring. Rather than being turned off if they caught a racket smash, I suspect most of them would make some kind of comment like, "now this is exciting!"

Pros should just throw their unwanted racquets into the crowd instead of destroying them, problem solved. :)

The penalty is fine as it is now.

In a case like the Baghdatis one maybe a game would be all right. That was a bit too much.

As long as the court isn't damaged, let them fly I say. It's their racquets. They're not smashing them on people's heads.

I would like to see a rule requiring a minimum of one racquet smash per match.

If executed properly, it can be highly entertaining.

On a serious note, I remember how long it took me to save for my first good one...I cringe every time I see a broken one.

Never broke a racquet intentionally. Never forget breaking a Head Vilas after it slipped out of my grip on an overhead.

Another problem with this rule is that the media love it. They might get all po-faced about it, as they love to be scandalised, but they also love to pick out the few moments when a racquet's life is sadly snuffed out in their highlights package, or to use in newspaper articles.

Of course, they like to claim it's terrible, and a bad example etc etc, but if they truly believed that, they'd not draw attention to it the way they do.

I'd rather players didn't do it, but I agree with others, so long as they aren't damaging the court, or a person, or equipment that doesn't belong to them, it's fine. From a tactical point of view, it's better to get the angst out quickly, then move on.

If parents are worried their child will get ideas, they can simply point out that they don't have a sponsorship deal, so have to make do with what they've got. The loss of a racquet is no more of a loss to a top player than the loss of a sweat band, which they will happily throw to the crowd after a match. No-one claims that is evidence of being too rich and spoilt.

The top players also get through loads of pairs of trainers, and everything else. They would be getting a whole load of new racquets for each tournament whether or not they break a few along the way.

Serena is pretty proficient at it. Great wrist snap to go along with her power: Example 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH9C7qhlQNQ) - Example 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4y0cJskz-4)

They should give a 1-tournament ban every time a player goes over the time limit.

If 3 of these are issued, the player is banned for life.

Also, the player who has the most weeks listed as #2 should be banned for life too.

They tried to do the same thing with hockey fighting...making NASCAR safer for less wrecks...and popularity has dropped.

people want to see drama... and when you have players creating polarizing personalities it creates rivalry and more intrigue because it's not just oh mr. nice guy #1 out playe mr. nice guy#2 but you have good vs evil...and classy vs bratty etc..

Yeah and they're also mostly unstable individuals who take sports way too seriously and who literally have played tennis their whole lives and are short on real world perspective, so I don't expect much from them. But then again that's what makes them so exceptional. I mean, when you look at someone like Nadal, he's a great sportsman and his tennis is admirable but he's still basically a child. Djokovic is no different, not really.

Raquet smashes are fun to watch. Long may they continue! Seriously though, if you're going to give game penalties why stop there, why not just make them forfeit the match. Giving away a game could essentially give away sets...Silly idea OP.

Before introducing new rules, I'd like to see the existing rules being enforced by umpires. Wake me up when a player gets a point penalty for breaking rules on court.

Starting next year, there won't even be a point penalty in the rulebook for time violations (for the server anyway). So, if it doesn't happen this year, you're not going to see it.

woodrow1029
10-16-2012, 08:25 AM
a game penalty for the first racket smash would be a terrible idea, unless, of course the player has already received 2 code violations, then the third one would be a game penalty.

woodrow1029
10-16-2012, 08:26 AM
I think what should be done is that they should do away with the warning. First code violation point penalty, second code violation game penalty, third and each code violation gets either a game penalty or a default (to the supervisor's discretion).

These players are sacrificing their cherished racquets for the entertainment of the viewers. We should applaud these actions, not penalize their charity.

Worst idea ever. When even emotionless Federer can snap a racquet into a twig after playing poorly, then it kinda says that it's not that big of a deal. Interestingly, I do not remember seeing Nadal ever demolish a frame. He's a prat all other times, but I don't know if I've seen him smash a racquet.
