I have started jumping on most my overheads unless they are easy short lobs. It seems my consistency and timing is actually better which is the main reason I do it. This one instructor was telling me I should never jump unless that lob is so deep and you are " beat" that is they only way I can hit it. Is this sound advice, because I am actually having more success with jumping.

Depends on how high you are jumping. If you jump too high, you may not recover well. Some pros do jump on overheads but then again they do other things such as tweener shots or other showboat shots. I would say a jump overhead is a showboat shot but if you can end the point with it and consitantly hit it, why not.

Do the scissor kick instead. That'll satisfy your "need" for jumping.
