I've heard you should be more aggressive in tiebreakers, but are there any rules of thumb on how to play different scores? Let's assume you're 4.0+
Serving
15-30 be aggressive or make him play?
Deuce-?
0-40 how do you structure a hold?
Returning
0-30 go for broke?
15-30 make him play or attack a second serve?
15-40 be aggressive?

at 15-30 i always just stay in the point and wait for a short ball, cuz i hate 15-40 and that's hard to come back from
at deuce i come out swinging to try to get the upper hand
at love-40 i am really cautious, clearing the net high, adding extra spin hitting it up the middle so it limits the opponents angles and gives you the lowest part of the net

the pt before someone have a chance to win the game is the pt u should fight hardest on.
ex 30 all, 30-15, 15-30, 30-0, 0-30, deuce.
because if u won those pts u are a pt away from winning the game while your opponent is 3 pts away from winning the game. pressure is on.
read "winning ugly", its got all you need to know to play EVERY kind of pt in any situation. GREAT book.

never lose the 30-0 pt. there is a big difference between 40-0 and 30-15. the opponent now has a chance to take the game at 30-15. you should be able to close out from a 40-0 lead. Just make the person play and make him hit 4 winners in a row. which is highley doubtfull

when i'm serving, i try to be more agressive if i'm down a couple points. when i'm returning the biggest thing for me is getting the return back in play and then looking to be agressive later in the point. i almost always win points from the net.

A fellow commentator asked Jim Courier what his strategy was during a tie-break.
Jim replied that he always played "percentage" tennis when HE was serving,
and he played "aggressive" tennis when the other guy was serving.
He explained that when HE was serving he wanted to give himself the best chance of winning the point, so he played the smart percentages. He said he figured when the OTHER guy was serving he was probably going to lose the point anyway, so he just as well swing away at some low percentage shots and maybe he'd get lucky. If he could win ALL his own service points, and JUST ONE of the other guy's, he'd win the tiebreak.
