-- Hold the ball with your thumb and middle finger; other fingers are there for support. Basically you should be holding the ball in your finger tips!
-- The tossing arm is stiff and relatively straight and moves only from one hinge -- the shoulder!
Practice many tosses:
-- tosses for flat serve : at 1 o'clock
-- tosses for slice serve: 1:30 to 2o'clock
-- tosses for kick serve: 11:30 to 12:00 but slightly behind.
Toss with left hand, catch with right hand.
Toss with left hand, hit with right hand over the net (tap the ball over the net).
Now toss and hit regular serves with racket!

Assuming you're righthanded, stand at your serving position on the baseline. Your left foot should be pointed at the right netpost. Lay your racquet on the ground in front of your left foot, with the handle next to your toes and the head in line with the right netpost. Now, practice your toss (and JUST your toss - don't swing at the ball). Let the ball bounce after the toss - it should bounce right in the middle of the stringbed of your racquet laying on the ground. This is one way to practice your toss.
Another way is to stand under a basketball hoop. Practice your toss by tossing into the middle of the hoop. Again, don't swing at the ball (duh!).
