View Full Version : When you toss the ball while serving, do you look over your deltoid or your "armpit"

Can someone please give me a dissertation on the subtlety of the tossing arm.

First the palm. After you toss the ball, do you turn your palm away from you? Biomechanically does it do any good?

Second, how high do you swing your tossing arm? less than upright? upright? pass upright?

Biomechanically, which tossing arm swing is more sound? Looking over your deltoid or looking over your "armpit"?

I think I am looking along my forearm ...

If you have to figure out whether to look over the deltoid or through your armpit area to track the ball, you are simply distorting your body too much. Keep your neck and back in natural position. No need to flex or hyperextend them on purpose.

When I toss the ball, I look at the ball till I hit it. Nothing else in sight.

1171 - Have you already used SEARCH to find the 200, or so, threads which address the mechanics of the toss ... and serve?

It is nice that we can analyze a serve motion and get out of it the main components of the serve. I also know that I am probably amongst the coaches that sometimes can be perceived to analyze too much.

However, you my friend take the cake! I have never heard anyone ask this question. I also am wondering why this is important to you or even if it is important.

First the palm. After you toss the ball, do you turn your palm away from you? Biomechanically does it do any good?

I really dont know, it is such a small area (and quite possibly an insignificant area) of study that you will probably get either no anwer to this question or an answer that biased - if information on this even exists. To me, it is just too small of an issue to try and breakdown.

Second, how high do you swing your tossing arm? less than upright? upright? pass upright?

I really dont understand "swing your tossing arm". You should stretch your tossing arm as far as possible on the serve to get your front side to stretch or load.

Biomechanically, which tossing arm swing is more sound? Looking over your deltoid or looking over your "armpit"?

Again, there are no studies that I am aware of that provide information on this. This really leaves me scratching my head wondering why you need this information or why it is an issue for you. When you use the term biomechanically you are asking for more information than you realize. You are actually asking for a scientific study. I dont know of any that has compared the two or three or four different ways to determine "which" is better.
