All the time, but nobody freaks because I have on nylon sweatpants instead of shorts.

White are way better, looks better too...but yeah, sometimes(rarely) I'll put some black socks on.

I wear them very often simply because I wear Nike BLACK shoes. They look great with black shoes. But with white shoes it is wrong, of course.

I've never worn black socks before. I might get a pair of nike black socks if I get black tennis shoes to match with it.

honestly depends. In the fall/winter, when I'm playing indoors, usually black. Rest of the time it's white.
Fashion? Since when have tennis players had a good fashion sense?

I never wear black socks. Of course I don't have any black tennis shoes. I do have Silver Yonex and some gray adidas B2s but I still wear white socks with them.

In an old Sports Illustrated, a college basketball coach had to assemble a team under duress and a very tight deadline. The question put to him was "How did you make your personnel decisions so quickly?"
His answer: "The first thing I did was cut the guys wearing black socks."
'Nuff said.

always white socks
I wear black socks in the gym, and I would wear them on the tennis court if I could ever find Thor Lo tennis socks or another tennis sock of similar thickness and comfort.

I bought a pair of Nike Dri-Fit black socks because they were on sale. They were kind of tight (fit wise). I don't think they're worth $8.00 retail. I kind of like them because it's something different. Anything you can do to distract your opponent...you should.

Phil,
Look for SmartWools. Best socks ever, IMHO. You can get those bad boys in black, blue, red, yellow, white, gray, whatever. I know you have played squash and rball and those sports produce more blisters on my feet than tennis ever has. No blisters since I switched to SmartWool 2 years ago. Good cushioning and moisture transfer, as well. Now hit those weights!!

I wear black adidas clima cool socks, but my shoes are black and white BIII's. Plus they're "no-shows" so it's hard to see them.

I used to play with black shoes, black socks, black shorts, black t-shirt, black headband and wrist bands. And of course a black racket (Wilson PS 6.0-85) with a black overgrip.
But lately I've relaxed a bit. My shoes are now white/red and my overgrip is white. And the shirts can be just about anything...

I wear all white a lot during summer when the temperture is 85 degrees - 100 degrees, you got to stay as cool as possible during summer, but I do wear black shirt abd shorts at night. I wear colorfully when I play in tempurture around 60 degrees - 80 degrees around spring to fall. I wear lot of dark clothes during winter.

Kevin - I wear Smart Wool for hiking and general walking around and you're absolutely right-they're amazingly comfortable. My cousin turned me on to them last year when we went hiking in Yosemite. I didn't know they came in black-I've only seen gray. I am, honestly, going out tomorrow to track those babies down. Thanks for the tip. Got to hit the weights and aerobics especially hard after this past holiday's binging!

Phil,
Look for the Smartwool RBX Trainer, Micro Mini, Ultralight or Ultracushion. Each varies by thickness/cushioning. You can get each in white, gray, black and I've even seen them in blue and red. If you ever need to stock up, do a search for sierratradingpost (can't list, of course). You can get them for 1/2 price on close-out. Their stock is kind of slim right now but changes every few weeks.

And to think that I thought (besides Andy Roddick and the UM 'Canes) that only those low grade "home-spun/bachelor-party quality" 8mm porn flicks from the 1950's had guys "wearing black socks-while in action" ....... ...... slinks away Bill Murray-style (Caddyshack during the rain storm)......

Showdown:
1960's Dick Van D Y K E Show
--- vs ----
1970's Mary Tyler Moore Show
I. Theme Song/Beginning
Dick Van D Y K E Show: replete with the 2 different beginning themes; the "early" version where he (character=Rob Petrie) trips over the hassek and then the later version where Dick (Rob Petrie) nimbly skips around it--both versions containing a clever piece of "musical onomatopoeia" what with the xylophone and the kettle drum matching his "encounter" with the wayward foot stool.
Mary Tyler Moore Show: From the "easy-listening FM station Mike Post/Hill Street Blues" school of theme song writing (later example: "Cheers"). Wimpy piano with "wistfully sung" lyrics. People who'd vote for this over the "snappy/jazzy" orchestral opening of the Dick Van D Y K E show probably read (and posted in their h.s. yearbooks) Rod McKuen poetry, Mary's cute/charming pirouette (throwing her tam-o-shanter up in the air) notwithstanding.
Decision: Dick Van D Y K E (10-9 round)
------------------------------------------------------------------
II. Characters
Dick Van D Y K E Show: Amazing to think that the 60's Mary Tyler Moore (as Laura Petrie; when she more than had "it" going in those tight slacks) and the 70's Minneanapolis Mary Tyler Moore were the same person. If I played Laura Petrie's son Ritchie on that series, even as a kid barely outta the crib, they'd have to rename my character Sophocles. Her husband, Dick Van D Y K E (Rob Petrie) played a loosey-goosey kind of guy. Maury Amsterdam, Rose Marie? A bunch of veteran pros. Mel? Hysterical. Carl Reiner was Carl Reiner, period.
Mary Tyler Moore Show: Mary Tyler Moore, though still "sort of"...was no longer Laura Petrie, especially with those loud (and lame) 70's skirt/boot ensambles (straight eye from the straight guy :-)).
Lou Grant (Ed Asssner) vs. Rob Petrie? No brainer. Rob was fun. Lou Grant took himself so bleedin' seriously. Lou Grant was a f'in know-it-all/moral-authority creep who was a perfect foil to usher in that "Norman Lear P.C. type" 70's sit-com humor. What also sucked about the MaryTylerMoore Show (aside from that fatmouth Rhoda) was that other lameass side kick of hers who later played the Captain on the Love Boat (Love Boat?..I've got to get a life!!!), that shiny-noggined, goodie-two-shoes, Alan Alda/Phil Donahue "sensitive-and-feminist-friendly-guy" Gavin McLeon as "Maury": Lou Grant's ass-kissing, not-funny, suck up flunky.
Ted Knight was the only one who really made that show. Lou Grant belittling Ted Knight (and Maury's smarmy, snide little tag-ons to Ted) were NOT funny....Ted Knight bumbling HIS out-of-control ego WAS funny. The "other" Maury (Maury Amsterdam) was the "good Maury" in my book.
Main Characters:
Laura Petrie (60's) = 10
Mary Tyler Moore (70's) = 8
Rob Petrie = 10 +
Lou Grant = a big, fat ZERO; his score and his character
Lou Grant DISQUALIFIED for being overbearing and boring
Supporting Cast:
Dick Van D Y K E Show by a Knockout
But I digress; PHIL: are you SURE you never wore black socks back when you were a porn star? What about the time when you told me about that one film "Garden State Eden" that you filmed at the Capri-Hide-a-Way Motel in Teaneck, NJ where you said the filmmakers wanted to "film and scram" before the local cops got wind of it, so they (pressed for time) told you to keep your socks on while you were drilling for oil....??? I dunno......up late watching USC-Texas......memory is squeaking today......

Agree, when it hot I do wear lighter color, and darker if it is cold. But i have an array of color that I wear red, white, blue, yellow, green, orange, black, purple in short and shirt and just some combination is fun. But one time i did go Red badana, Red Shirt, Red Short, Black Shock, Black shoes and it does freak my friends out cause I am a big guy, hahaha...

Black socks are just cool. They look hell wicked with black shoes. Federer always used to wear black socks when wearing black shoes, same as some other guys on tour. But yes, I admit black socks look totally dorky if they're not sport socks!!

When I was in Catholic school, we were required to wear black socks as part of the uniform. Changing socks was too big a pain in the ass, so thats what I wore to practice. Now I always wear black socks (superstition).

I went to a Catholic school too but sometimes I wore white socks to class b/c for one, they don't always inspect your uniform, and two, I didn't have to change them after school.
