Inspired by Marcos' current run (two top 5 players so far, three if he goes all the way): who's got bragging rights for the toughest slam victory?

Agassi's 1994 USO win involved 5 seeds, but Stich's 1991 wimbledon was over three top 5 players, two of whom had met in the final the previous three years running. All three of the dudes he beat are in the hall of fame.

Any others?

Pre-emptive strike to all you Roddick and Nalbandian haters: you're not top 5 in the world in ANYTHING, so keep your hateratin' to yo self.

Yeah, I've been trying to find out how many unseeded players have beaten three top 10 players like Bags had done so far.

Here are some:
Unseeded Wilander beat 2(Lendl),3(Vilas),4(Clerc),5(Gerulaitis) to win the French in '82. That's got to be some kind of record.

Wasn't a slam victory, but still:
Unseeded Pernfors, '86 French, beats 3(Becker),5(Edberg),8(Leconte), 11(Jaite)
loses to Lendl in the final.

Unseeded Guga beat three former champs enroute to the '97 French Title.

Ivanisevic beat #3(Rafter),4(Safin),6(Henman) to win '01 Wimbledon.

Regarding Wilander's record - that seems very strange that #2,3,4 &5 were all in his section of the draw. If one of those was the finalists, it still seems very odd

2 was slated to play 5 in the quarters, with the winner playing 4 in the semis. 3 was in the other half of the draw & made the final. Not that strange in a random draw.

Kuerten's run to the RG title in 1997 was incredible, beating the "King of Clay" Thomas Muster in five sets (down 3-0 in the fifth!), grinding it out against defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov in five, and blitzing Sergi Bruguera in 3 for the final. All 3 wins were against RG champions.

That Wilander win is nuts. Thanks for reminding us.
