View Full Version : Will R-Fed ever reach Sampras 14?

Of course this has been talked about a lot recently but the tennis world keeps changing. If Nadal hadn't cropped up last year then Fed would have a good shot at the French for the next 3-4 years but unless Nadal is injured in one it doesn't look like he will have more than a long shot at ever winning one.

However he's going to continue to be the great favorite for the other slams, especially US and Wimbledon. If we approximate he will continue winning 2 a year as he has during his domination, he needs 4 more years at the top to equalize which wont be easy.

I think if he wants a shot he will have to win all AO, Wimb, and U.S. this year or its going to be very hard.

So much can happen before Federer reaches 14 Slam titles, but potentially he can, if he stays healthy and motivated long enough.

He's still young and he's already won 6 Slams so that's many for a male tennis player. Assuming he wins 2 Slams every year, he can get to 14 Slams before he retires.

I posted something similar on another thread: I think Federer will become stale and disinterested unless some guy comes along and really pushes him.

Sampras, in the last last throes of his career (2000-02) was playing purely to beat records....he's stated that in interviews.
But at least he had guys like Rafter, Kraijeck, Ivanisevic, Agassi, Hewitt and Safin to push him during this period.

Without guys like this to challenge him and unless Federer has the single-mindedness to go out and play tennis just for the purpose of achieving records, then he won't get 15 Slam titles.

Hmmm....so why not 14?? What's going to stop him equalling Sampras' 14??

I have a set of natural gut that says Federer wins all 4 this year.

True, just wait another 10 years and you will know...

14 grandslams is tough, but if anyone can do it, would have to be Federer. All the young guns should be maturing in 2 to 4 years though, I dont think it will get any easier.

I was just pointing out that I have one already. Rabbit beat you to the bet. A set of Klip legend goes to Rabbit if I lose and a set of Babolat VS goes to me if I win.

Oh yes definitely. He's already got 6 if I'm not mistaken and he's only 24. He'll win 2-3 Slams for the next couple of years and will likely take all 4 at least one season.

I believe he has a real good chance, if as said, he remains healthy and motivated. Also, my feeling is that Roland Garros will be the most difficult for him to win and if he wins any at all, it will only be one, possibly two.

The official bet is:

Federer wins Grand Slam = Rickson gets one set of VS

Federer loses in any of the four majors = Rabbit gets one set of Klip Legend 18

There's a lot of tennis to be played. However, Rickson, if you'd prefer, I can send you ten foot segments each time Federer wins a slam.

I think Federer will surpass 14 yes, and I think he will win the French at some point which would really put him in the higher echelons of the game even if he fails in his quest for 14+

All 4 this year is a possibility. If he win's tomorrow and at Roland Garros in June he will have completed the Roger slam by holding all 4 slams at the same time ala Tiger Woods, which would also be a remarkable achievement.

As people have said though, an awful lot can happen in the next few years.

Roger has said he wants to play until 2012. Many all-time greats are still playing championship contending tennis until age 30 or 31, some beyond.
There is no reason right now to believe Roger wont still be a major contender by 2012. If he won 2 slams this year he would need to average only 1 slam a year between 2007-2012 to tie the record, if he wins 3 slams this year he would need to average only 1 slam a year between 2007-2012 to break the record. If he has a great year this year it is not only conceivable, but probable.
