Team captain John Fitzgerald has named the Australian Davis Cup team that will clash with Switzerland from February 10-12 in Geneva, with Paul Hanley handed his first opportunity to represent his country in the prestigious event.

With the absence of top-ranked Australian Lleyton Hewitt, Fitzgerald has announced the team will be made up of Wayne Arthurs (world No.97), Chris Guccione (No.149), Paul Hanley (No.10 in doubles) and Polish-born Peter Luczak (No.116) - who impressed at the Australian Open.

Australian Open Junior boys’ finalist Nick Lindahl and Australian Open Wildcard-Playoff winner Marc Kimmich have been named as hitting partners for the team, allowing them to gain experience at the highest level of team tennis.

Todd Woodbridge will work with the Cup team as part of a new role with Tennis Australia, where he will act as a mentor for younger squad members.

"I am proud to announce a Team which has a great mix of experience and youth. Including Paul Hanley in the line-up gives us a number of options for the vital doubles rubber, and it is great to welcome him into the Optus Australian Davis Cup Team for the first time," Fitzgerald said.

"This will be a tough first round but I am really looking forward to giving Luczak and Guccione the opportunity to take on more responsibility. Even if (Roger) Federer doesn’t play we will face a formidable opposition. Switzerland’s No.2 player, Stanislas Wawrinka, reached the semis in Auckland and had a great 2005.

Australian Open champion Federer has not made his decision on whether to take his place in the Swiss team, telling the Herald Sun: "It's too early yet (to make a decision)."

"I will speak with the team later in the week and then decide."http://sportal.com.au/tennis.asp?i=news&id=77125

Thanks for posting that.
I was hoping Luzcaz would play and im glad he is. I think we will have trouble beating the swiss, even if Rog doesnt play.
I saw Stanlis Wawrlinka(sp?) play in the aus open and i rate him!

Hello Yours!05

Good post, I hope Australia can make a match of it without Lleyton. I especially like the way Peter Luczak played at the Aus open . Australia's future doesn't seem so bleak after the strong performances by a couple of the Aussies. Bring it ON !

go_nadal how was Melbourne and who did Stanlis Wawrlinka play ?

Bring it ON !I hope Arthurs' calf(?) is better and that he's more positive than he was in the Hopman. Personally, I'd rather not have Flipper:rolleyes: . In this situation guys like Luczac can often bring out something special. Don't think I've seen Hanley before - maybe... didn't leave much impression.
Go GOOCH! But G*d that Wawrinka's good! Regardless of what Fed said, I think he's less likely to play now that Hewitt isn't.

Yours!05 I watched the Gooch and Hanley play doubles against the Bryan Bros (Medibank live) and was disappointed in the way hanley played he seemed to be out of his depth . I felt he let Chris down on major points that would have seen them win against one of the best doubles combos going around atm. I think if he pulled the paddle pop stick out of his arse and stopped being so damn cocky he could be a great player not that he isn't already. imo

Buy the way I think it's time to bring on Yours!06 hehe
