Tiger Woods Wins Buick Open

The January Buick Open is not the Masters! Meanwhile, Federer, age 24, won his 7th Slam, his 2nd Australian. 560,000 tickets were sold and it was seen around the world -- a truly international event. Yet in a major NY area sports section the result was a WIRE FEED tucked away many pages back. Also featured: "Piazza signs deal with Padres."

So how has tennis accomplished this Houdini-like vanishing act?

)It depemds on what paper it was in

2)Whether the sports editor is interested in tennis

3)Very few people follow tennis as compared to golf and football (are the Padres football? I don't follow it)

4) Media should be presenting unbiased reporting, but they don't

5) Federer isn't American, and most general sports readers either have never heard of him or don't care about him.

The media is doing their job. They report on who people want to hear about. Since Tiger Woods came onto the scene, golf has grown to all-time highs in terms of popularity. Tiger is, and has been the highest paid and most sought after athlete in the world. Everybody knows who Tiger is. Golf's TV ratings are at all-time highs when Tiger plays.

ESPN dropped USA Davis Cup for goodness sake, that speaks volumes.

Nike continues to expand their visibility in golf while dropping its presence in tennis.

The tennis establishment continues to do a poor job of marketing the game.
