View Full Version : ProStaff 6.1 Classic (White Cap vs. Black Cap)

What's the deal (difference) between a PS 6.1 with white cap and one with black cap, and can you buy the white cap from tenniswarehouse, or just the black? I've read the black are heavier, and there's a significant difference, but how exactly do they hit differently? I would like to demo this racquet, I own a HPS 6.1 (which I like).

having used the psc6.1 for a while, the white cap versions were the first versions released back in the early 90s. as compared to the black cap versions, the white caps were lighter and they seemed a little more flexible, but that was probably due to the white caps having been more broken in than the black caps.

I have one of each and my white cap version is definately lighter and more flexible.

Ah yes this discussion goes on...

Ive heard lots of things. I've heard some of early bacl caps had the same wieght as the white caps. It was the later black caps that were heavier. I've also heard that the weight difference is in the different grip used on the rackets.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I will demo the racquet and see for myself. TW's specs on it are 12.6 oz, 11pt headlight, with a 72 stiffness index, sounds fine for me. The HPS 6.1 does have a slight "trampoline effect" and its flex index is smaller in comparison. I've noticed the pattern in the ProStaff racquets, headsize, flex index, and point balance all increase proportionaly together to keep it feeling right when swinging. As I don't have any "tennis elbow" problems, I don't mind less flexibility, such as the reviews for the PS Classic describe.

I also have a 6.1 Classic with a white cap that I purchased off a teaching pro a while back. It is totally worn out and makes little cracking sounds occasionally when I string it, but I love it. I've demoed other frames, customized, and cut newer frames to match it, but haven't seemed to been able to match the feel and power I receive from this particular one. I tried a few of the newer black cap models a while back and found them way too stiff and a little less manueverable. The HPS 6.1 was not bad, but felt a little hollow and stiff also. If anyone has also had or is having this experience, please let me know if you have found a newer model (doesn't have to be Wilson) to replace the white capped one in this thread.

Thanks a lot Greg for the numbers! Are they all the same grip size and is the balance number for the second frame been misstyped or is it that much different than the others? Do you happen to have the rough ages of them also?

Same grip sizes: no misprint. I don't know the ages, though. Sorry. These frames have never been used in play. Each has its original bumperguard and leather grip.

I should have mentioned that these are the specs for the bare frames.
