View Full Version : Best forehand, backhand, serve, etc...ever? (Open Era)

Was wondering what others thought about this?

My thoughts are:

Serve: Sampras
Forehand: Muster (kind of one-dimensional though).... Federer (more versatile)
one-hand Backhand: Kuerten....Edberg (Flat and punishing :p )
two-hand Backhand: Agassi, Connors (definitely flat) Safin
Volley: Edberg...Sampras

I'm probably not doing justice to many so please feel free to add and state your reasons! If anyone wants to expand on specific strokes like the running forehand, lob, etc. ;) be my guest!

If not limited to men, add JHH to the 1HBH list...

PS: If not for her small wierd boobies (eventhough, nowadays, that can be fixed), I'd be in love with her

Serve: Sampras
Return: Agassi
Volley: McEnroe

Is there even a question of these three? I think it's pretty much set in stone. The rest is subjective. I'm sure there were some great volleyers back in the day, but we at least have proof of McEnroe's greatness because at his age he can still volley back the hardest shots you can throw at him.

Good list including Lendl. A forgotten great player. I would even put his serve maybe not the best list but definitely on the top list.

Always loved the way Lendl would administer the coup de grace with a hard flat serve down the middle at match point. The opponent wouldn't even try after having been bludgeoned all match long.
