I think this might be what's holding me back from tennis stardom. I have a beard! If I get rid of it, I'm thinking all my troubles will be solved.

Seriously though, why don't you see anyone with a beard? You see scruff, but no beards or anything. What's up with that?

People would end up with really bad beard tans.

Depends on the length of the beard, but haven't you paid attention as to how hot it gets down on court? I mean playing with a beard in the Australian heat for 5 sets? Come on...

It's because beards are ugly and tennis is a beautiful game.

If you have a Tom Cruise's face, beards looks great! Kiefer has beard also, he looks like Colin Farrell playing tennis haha!

It is hard to keep your head still if you have extra weight pulling your head downward. It will get worse in the windy day, with increased wind resistance, your groundstrokes become more unstable, it affects your approach shots even more, since you are moving with an unstable hitting platform.

Maybe because the tan lines would look ridiculous if they shaved it off.

Because they wouldn't get hot chicks. The only bearded man who looks hot is George Michael, and even his is not a full beard.

Moved to GPPD, since it seems more relevant here (talking about pros with beards). :)

no he won't be the ATP won't have any of it. giving him another edge would only decrease further television ratings.

Jimmy Connors had one for a while. Bjorn Borg did too. Roddick once grew a mini Borg scruff during Wimbledon.

Roger Federer has a beard (Mirka), she's his cover, because he secretly loves me. I am the only ... in the village.

Agassi had a well-trimmed three weeker for a while -- as 99 RG champion, if memory serves.
Borg and Marcos = tournament related [superstitious] facial hair.
Connors = patchy. Torben Ulrich's beard was from the heart. Newk's moustache was more famous than any beard in sports.
Nasty and Noah grew some out here and there.
Like a lot of today's goateed players, Noah and Mac did the chinstache during the grunge era.
Sherwood Stewart is the only one I remember with a full one, though.
But the best beard in tennis award happily goes to Goran Ivanisevic, circa Wimbledon 1998.

If only the guys from ZZ Top had taken up tennis.

Agassi had a fearsome face rug for a while which was the start of his piratical on court demeanour. He still seemed to have shall we say "pleasing" support in the stands despite it. Borg's growth through Wimbledon is no doubt the most famous fungus exhibited on court - clearing benefitting from the fertiliser used thereabouts. Otherwise the modern goatee has a few fans, but very few moustachioed heroes over the years. Possibly the most successful soup strainer was that sported by Stan Smith.

Yheah, ^ THAT means a lot, coming from a fashion mogul like you, Mugatu!

I just think Hewitt listened to one too many Silverchair cds and is trying to be a hipster.

Bjorn Borg's beard, moustache and side-burn combo is the best! It's epitome of the word 'cool'.....in the 70's at least.

True. How is that kid even mentioned in this thread?

Oh, and this thread reminds me of a line from Joe Dirt. Forgettable film, but Dennis Miller had a pearl. Something like,
'you mean to tell me you're so ingrained with white trash DNA that your facial hair actually grows in that way?'

One of my favorite players, Magnus Larsson, rocked a beard from time to time. It kinda made him look like Santa Claus.
