I was always told to get my raqcuet as high as possible on a serve, and to put the ball in the same place. At least, I think I was. Anyways, I do distinctly remember hearing repeatedly that you should "get your toss up." My toss is high, and even when it's consistent, my service game... well, it sucks.

I was experimenting with different serves a week ago, and discovered that I could serve (comparatively) a lot faster, and more consistently if I tossed so that the ball peaked around the height of my full extension, and hit it. Usually, the ball seemed to be falling by then, but my memory's a bit hazy. One of the coaches tried to correct it a little later, and my serves floated high over the net, and haphazardously went in, with practically no pace, and what little directional control I have on my weakest stroke nowhere to be found.

So, I tried my short toss again right in front of him, and he said it was excellent, but my toss needed to be just a little higher, which I complied with, and couldn't repeat the quality which I could with the low toss.

I put forth this question, then. Form, or results? I don't believe my arm is fully extended on my shorter toss, but it is close. I'm only 5'6", but my serves are mostly flat, and occasionally minor topspin, which isn't nearly as terrible as it once was, after it warms up.
