I saw someone else do it pretty successfully, so now I would like to do it myself.
I describe myself, you give me a US rating. Thanks
Note: I am 16 years old, left-handed, short, and love to chase balls down because I am pretty quick and have good reflexes.
Serve: Am capable of serving at 145-155kph, though i usually average about 130. First serve is simple and flat, and i can vary that virtually anywhere. Second serve is slice, which is particuarly effective on the advantage court. Am capable of hitting aces from the advantage court when the ball hits the outside line and kicks out (on a second serve), and can ace on either side by aiming for the left of the service box (i.e. wide on the deuce court, down the tee on the advantage court).
Forehand: Can be very powerful and accurate when I time it right, but the amount of times I to this or have the confidence to do it is not very high. However I am pretty consistent with blasting second serve returns down the line or inside-out. Never try flat shots, I get carried away. I can also place shot's very well and thus set up a point. I like to slice and lob/pass as well, to add a bit of variety to my game.
Backhand: Not such a weapon, (with the exception of my cross-court flat) but is very consistent and I like to frustrate my opponents by floating it in near the baseline. Anyway, my cross-court flat has arguably more power then my forehand winners, and is virtually always an instant winner if I have set up the point correctly. My drop shots are also extremely competant, i can change it up from the baseline if I want to, and if its not a clean winner, the next shot usually is.
Volleys: Not exactly my strength, but I am getting better and better. I mainly say that because being small, once I sneak into the net I get lobbed, chase it down and am back at square one again. But like I said above, I have pretty good reflexes and usually can guide the ball to where I want it to go.
Have fun!

Most competitive high school players can be classified as 4.0.

You could be anywhere from a 3.0 to a 4.0. However, the telling evidence of your rating is your match record, who you played against and their rating.

I'd say the best HS players ( top 4 ) in my area are 4.5 - 5.0, yes, that good. There's a 16 yr old here ( Whitney Taney s?) who played in a pro womans tournament here last month and got to the third round, knocking a few in the top #200 off.

Most likely about a 3.0 to 3.5.

i actually disagree with this...
the #1 singles player on the boys team at my school is 6.0 according to the NTRP ratings, but of course the school i am at right now is known for tennis, especially the girls team (they're undefeated for 10 years straight w/ a record of 120-0)

5.0!? Man, you are nice! He has a 90mph serve, no backhand, no volley, and his forehand is only good when he times it right. A 5.0? lol

I would say 3.0-4.0 and most likely a 3.5 like most high school players around here. He did say backhand was consistent, so no glaring weaknesses that I would pick on so it's possible he is 4.0, but if he is asking and doesn't know, then probably not quite that good.
2.0 with allusions of 4.0

3.5
The high school (Varsity) level around here is 3.5-5.0
We only have 1 5.0, but it still counts. ;)

6.0?! He should be winning open tournaments at that skill level. Is he?

I believe in you man! cuz I got smoke by some kid last year in the regional, which I believe he's like a 5.0-6.0 . I had no chance whatsoever to control the game. He dominted the game lol

High 3.0 to mid 3.5. But judging by his competition, it's not that high if you can "smack a 2nd serve back." A 4.0 or higher would have a decent serve by then, and at least have either spin, pace, or placement. And if he played a true 4.0, his game would fall apart so fast even his mighty forehand, he wouldn't know what hit him.

What are you working on these days? (What are you trying to get better at?) What are your goals?
Do you want suggestions?

Definately a 3.5 possibly slipping into the low 4.0 category on a good day. Don't take this as a dis though cuz at 16 that isn't bad at all. I also do not believe you will see many if any 6.0 high school players because they normally are playing much larger tournaments.

Yeah, most 6.0's don't even bother to play high school tennis. If they do, they win the state title pretty easily... which looks good on their college applications.

we can not rate the guy on paper. are you guys kidding me, some of you are experts at this game, you know this is completely redicules to rate someone based on their description. its inaccurate for one to rate himself, have others rate him based on his descriptions. there are so many ways to misinterpret things. not saying he is lying, but he might see himself doing something at his level but its not really what we see him doing.
maybe tell us some match records, USTA tournament records, then we will tell you.
as for highschool player ratings... it really depends. in our conference, the best players is #4 in the state and I'm gonna go ahead and guess he is 5.0. I'm a weak 3.5 player and I can beat some of the 1 singles in the conference. at a good 3.0 last year, I went 4-7 at 2 singles. so some places are weaker than others.

We can do whatever we want. We took the information provided and rated it. It does not mean he is REALLY a 3.0 or a 5.0. We simply took the information and rated it. Comprende? Don't get all jacked up over nothing. He still has to go out and play. Pull your head out.

Maybe...but he didn't. We rated the information, got a problem with that? Call someone who cares.

So you are guessing he is a 5.0? LOL, what a joker.
I would rate you a 2.0 player that thinks he is a 3.5. You probably are worse then the description above. So go fly a kite Mr. 2.0.

I don't care.
It is stupid to have any weight on this. If someone is that naive to not understand that coaches are providing their unofficial ratings based on the information above - they deserve that response. Many people have come up to me and asked what level they are by providing a description of how they play. Coaches can and will provide the player with an "unofficial rating". The rating has no bearing on play results and is a ballpark number if the player is truthful in his self-analysis.
MY RESPONSE STANDS.

obviously volleys, and i feel on form at the moment, which means that forehands are being struck superbly and backhands just as sweetly. but yep, volleying and positioning myself at the net is the main area i want to work on.

We were given enough information to rate him. Most high school players will fall into the 3.0-3.5 rating without any further information necessary. If you're any higher than that, then you probably know your rating already. That's because most likely, you've taken lessons from a pro and you entered in tournaments to get that good.
When asked to give a rating for a high school player, people will say something like 3.0-4.0 which is a pretty broad range. The kid still won't know what his level is. But what next? Some 4.5 will start a thread and ask for a rating? Then say how this is all bs when someone replies 3.0-3.5?

for all the great advices I've seen you give on this board. this truly did not sound like a respectable and knowledgable coach to me. I expected more inteligent response than what you gave. you can be 100% against my idea, but the way you stated it really makes you look like a 10 year old. Who are you to call me names and a 2.0 player? I did not direct any of my post toward you. I personally think its redicules for us to give him what we think his game is based on a few things he says. I mean, whats "direct the serve well", whats "powerful forehand". I have lost all respect now, of course you are too ignorant to care so why bother. with all the trolls hanging around the board, I did not think the coaches would start de-aging as well.

Donnyz89,
You have to realize something. I dont get paid to offer my advice from you or anyone else. This allows me to be objective and down right blunt about things I feel are out of line. You were way out of line to even suggest "us coaches" in your little itty bitty comments about things you have no clue of MR. 2.0!!!
I could really careless what you think. You are insignificant. If the guy wants to give us the amount of information as he did above, I WILL RATE IT! GOT IT?
If he wants to provide more information OR allow us to SEE his strokes, I WILL MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO MY RATING IF NEEDED! GOT IT? UNDERSTAND? MAKE SENSE? COMPRENDE?
DUH?
