I rolled my ankle for the first time during a match last summer and started wearing the ASO ankle braces. They work well, but are a bit bulky and hot. I've been thinking about taping my ankles with athletic tape instead but was wondering if it is as effective as the braces and if the tape is more breathable. Any opinions as to whether the tape or the ASO brace is more effective/comfortable?

Well, I've used both tape and braces. I personally like the tape. Our coach uses pre-wrap so the tape doesnt stick your leg, and the tape. I wear it under my sock. I like it because I feel like theres more support. For me, it really doesnt matter, but I'd choose tape over brace. It could be different for you though. My doubles partner used a brace instead of tape. It just depends.

I think taping works well if you know how to do it, or have someone who does it well. If you wrap it improperly, it becomes much less effective than an ankle brace AND you could be cutting your circulations down there, which for obvious reasons is not a good thing.

Personally, ankle braces look cooler IMO

Also during the course of a match tape will become less and less supportive. Braces really aren't distracting and for me feel fine. You might want to try to get a dri-fit type sock such as the under armour ones to wear under the braces, they get much less wet.

Look for a Stromgren elastic sleeve with an elastic 'figure-8' wrap. Better than tape since it has memory--much less bulky than braces. Not sure if the brand is still available--haven't needed one since having three screws installed in my foot almost three years ago. Wore them for 20 years before that.
